Description	:	Wendell Howard Matthias, 72, of Denver, died at home Friday, Dec. 26, of cardiac amyloidosis. He was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Waverly, son of Lorenz and Regina Mickan Matthias. On June 6, 1959, he married Elaine Schneider in Chicago. Mr. Matthias attended Denver High School and graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, in 1958. He served in the Army Reserves and had farmed in the Denver area, retiring in 1996. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, he served as deacon and on the church council for numerous years. He was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Waverly, son of Lorenz and Regina Mickan Matthias. On June 6, 1959, he married Elaine Schneider in Chicago. Mr. Matthias attended Denver High School and graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, in 1958. He served in the Army Reserves and had farmed in the Denver area, retiring in 1996. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, he served as deacon and on the church council for numerous years. He was one of the founding builders for what is now Willow Run Country Club, Denver. In 1986 he was a member of the National Leadership Committee-Wartburg Design for Tomorrow. For his volunteer work with the Denver Schools he received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1991. He was a charter member of the Denver Lions Club and received the Coleman Honorary Award from the Iowa Lions Foundation. Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Wendy (Robert) Lamos of Waverly; a son, Brent (Kari) of Waverly; six grandchildren, Matthew Lamos of Las Vegas, Megan Lamos and Brenden, Kali, Kira and Keela Matthias, all of Waverly; two brothers, Eugene (Jan) of Readlyn and Warren (Elaine) of Tucson, Ariz. Preceded in death by: a daughter, Renee. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, with burial in the church cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church. Memorials: may be directed to Wartburg College, Allen Hospital Foundation or the church. Condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
