Description	:	Wilhelm Sr and Ingeborg Michaelson Carstens' Story (Compiled by Gordon Carstens): Wilhelm Sr Carstens was born April 5, 1830 to Heinrich Detlef Carstens (1789-1847) and Katherine Buchholz Carstens (1817-1892) in Kirchspiel Drelsdorf, Kreis, Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Wilhelm Sr was educated in German schools and learned the trade of baker. It was as a baker that he met his future wife Ingeborg (Inge) Michaelson, who was also trained as a baker. Wilhelm Sr was educated in German schools and learned the trade of baker. It was as a baker that he met his future wife Ingeborg (Inge) Michaelson, who was also trained as a baker. Wilhelm Sr Carstens married Inge Marie Michaelsen on May 8, 1859 in Germany. Wilhelm Sr and Inge had 2 sons (Henry in 1860 and Hans in 1862), 1 daughter (Sophia in 1871) and 2 children that died in infancy that were born in Germany before they immigrated to America in 1874. Sailing aboard the Westphalia, Wilhelm Sr and Inge, and their 3 oldest children Henry, Hans and Sophia, emigrated to America in March of 1874. Wilhelm Sr and his family then continued their western migration to Iowa, where they settled and lived in Scott County, Iowa for several years. Their 2nd daughter Cecelia was born in 1875 in Scott County, Iowa. In 1875, Wilhelm Sr and Inge, and their 4 children (Henry, Hans, Sophia and Cecelia) traveled by covered wagon from Davenport, Iowa to Otter Creek township in Crawford County. Wilhelm Sr and Inge's last son, William Jr Carstens was born on January 9, 1877 in Otter Creek township, Crawford County, Iowa. In 1878, Wilhelm Sr and Inge purchased a farm in Otter Creek township. By 1893, according to the Otter Creek township map, Wilhelm Sr and Inge owned a 280-acre farm that was located several miles east of the present town of Schleswig. Wilhelm Sr became a naturalized citizen of the United States on January 13, 1880, and according to the 1880 US census, Wilhelm Sr and Inge were living on their farm in Otter Creek township with their 5 children. Wilhelm Sr Carstens was a founding member of the German Mutual Insurance Company, which was formed in 1879 to promote the prosperity of farmers in Otter Creek Township. Inge Michaelson Carstens died on July 22, 1898 and was buried in the the Morgan Cemetery. Following Inge's death, Wilhelm Sr at the age of 63, moved from his farm in Otter Creek township to Charter Oak. Wilhelm Sr applied for a US passport on February 17, 1903. In the passport application, Wilhelm Sr indicated that his occupation was farmer and that he planned to go abroad temporarily and return to the US within 1 year. However, there is no evidence to indicate that Wilhelm Sr traveled to or from Germany in 1903 or 1904. Wilhelm's physical description on the passport application indicated that he was 5 foot 3 inches tall and had blue eyes and a full beard. On November 19, 1903 Wilhelm Sr was married to Carolina Soenksen in the St John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Wilhelm Sr Carstens died on April 25 1909, and was buried next to his first wife Inge at the Morgan Cemetery south of Schleswig, Iowa. Wilhelm Sr Carstens' will was executed on July 27, 1909. In the will, he bequeathed 1/5 of his estate to each of his 5 living children: (1) Heinrich C Carstens of Payette, Idaho, (2) Hans L Carstens of Charter Oak, Iowa, (3) Sophie Carstens Hansen, wife of Heinrich Hansen of Boyer township, Iowa, (4) Cecilia Carstens Lafrentz, wife of Henry Lafrentz of Schleswig, Iowa and Wilhelm Jr Carstens of Schleswig, Iowa. Wilhelm Sr Carstens' Obituary (Denison Bulletin; July 28, 1909): At the home of his son, Hans Carstens, in north Charter Oak, Wilhelm Sr Carstens passed away on Sunday morning, July 25, 1909 at the age of 79 years and 3 months. Father Carstens was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on April 25, 1830. In 1874, he and his wife came to America and the next couple of years found them located in Otter Creek township of Crawford County. Seven children were born to Mr and Mrs Carstens, 2 of whom died as infants in Germany. Mrs Carstens [Ingeborg (Inge) Marie Michaelsen Carstens], the wife and mother died 12 years ago. The children who are living are Henry Carstens of Idaho, Hans Carstens of Charter Oak, Sophia Hansen of Boyer township, Cecelia Lafrentz of Schleswig and William Jr Carstens. The funeral services were held Wednesday morning and were conducted by Rev Amstein. The body was laid at rest in the Nissen Cemetery near Schleswig [Now called the Morgan Cemetery].
