Hanken will be pained to learn that he passed away at his home in Lovell Township last Saturday evening at 8 p.m. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis, which affected his right side, Saturday, December 9. He rallied to a certain extent, but embolism developed in his lungs and he died shortly thereafter. Mr. Hanken spent his entire life in Lovell Township. He was born March 1, 1868, on the Hanken homestead and was a son of Wessel and Margaret (Heyen) Hanken. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran church at the age of 15 years. After reaching manhood, Mr. Hanken was married to Augusta Stadtmueller, June 16, 1897. Mrs. Hanken was a daughter of the late John Stadtmueller. The marriage was performed by Rev. Hugo Lutz, at that time pastor of St. Peter and St. Paul's Lutheran church of Castle Grove Township. This union was blessed by the birth of five sons and four daughters: two daughters preceded their father in death, Minnie at the age of 5 years and Anna at the age of 19 following an automobile accident. In addition to his widow, Mr. Hanken is survived by the following children: Wesley, Rudolph, Gerry, Fred, Johanna, Elesa and Kate. He is also survived by four brothers, Dan of Cherokee, John and Gerhard of Center Junction, and Fred of Langworthy. One brother, Henry, and a sister, Mrs. John Eden, died some years ago. Funeral services were held at the family home at 10 o'clock last Tuesday morning and at St. John's church. Rev. Paul T. Gutknecht had charge of the services and burial was had at the cemetery adjoining the church. In addition to being a successful farmer, Mr. Hanken took a great interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived. He had served on the board of directors of the Monticello creamery on numerous occasions and had been president of the board. He also had been a member of the board of trustees of Lovell Township and at the time of his death was president of the board of education of the Lovell township rural school district. He numbered his friends only by his acquaintances and will be sadly missed by his family circle.
