John Behrend Hanken, 72, prominent retired Jones county farmer passed away last Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock at the John McDonald hospital. He had been taken to the hospital several weeks ago after he had accidentally fallen downstairs and was badly bruised. Funeral services for Mr. Hanken were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Hanken home in Center Junction and at 2 o'clock at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in Wayne township. Rev. Paul T. Gutknecht officiated at the services. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery at Monticello. Music at the funeral was furnished by Dorothy Driebelbis and Gladis McNeilly with Mrs. Selma DeShaw at the organ. Pall-bearers were Paul Paulsen, Sr., C. M. Hoist, N. C. Hoist, Peter Prahm, J. R. McNeilly and Arthur Schrader. Born in 1866 Mr. Hanken was born in Jones county January 2, 1866. His parents were the late Wessel Behrends, and Margaretha Katherine (Heyen) Hanken. He was baptized at St. John's church February 9, 1866 and later confirmed in the same church Palm Sunday, 1882. He was a faithful member of the church and took much interest in its activities. He had held all offices in the church. He also served nine years on the Center Junction school board and was a director of the Center Junction Savings bank. The marriage of Mr. Hanken to Anna Angelina Tobiassen occurred Nov. 21, 1892. The ceremony was performed by Rev. von Strohe, who was at that time pastor of St. John's church. Three children were born to this union, Martha, Mrs. B. D. Heiken of Center Junction; Henrietta, Mrs. Floyd Love of Valley Junction, Kan.; and one son, Henry Hanken, of Olin; Mrs. Hanken passed away March 17,1928. Center Junction Home In 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Hanken and their family removed to Colorado due to ill health of some of the members in the family. They remained in that state for several years before returning to Iowa and on a farm east of Center Junction. Mr. Hanken continued in active work until a few years ago when failing eye sight made it impossible for him to continue active work. He had been tenderly cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Martha Heiken, and her family before his fall when it became necessary to remove him to the McDonald hospital. In addition to his children Mr. Hanken is survived by nine grand children, namely, Lovila Zimmerman, Olin; Otheal, Floy and Delores Love of Valley Center, Kan.; Ardris, Treva and John Albert Heiken of Center Junction and Gwelda and Chlona Hanken of Olin; one great-grandson, Kenneth Zimmerman; two brothers, Fred Hanken of Monticello and Dan Hanken of Cherokee. One sister, Mrs. John Eden, and three brothers; Henry, Gerd and William Hanken preceded him in death. The final summons of Mr. Hanken came at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 22 days. This ended a ifetime of rigeous and faithful christian living, He was a Kind and loyal friend to all who made his acquaintance.
