The funeral services were held at that church at 11:30 o'clock. These services were in charge of the Rev. Paul T. Gutknecht, pastor of St. John's church. Interment was had in the cemetery adjoining the church. Mr. Hanken was the owner of approximately 750 acres of land located in Scotch Grove and Madison townships. He was rated as one of the most influential and successful farmers living in Scotch Grove township at the time of his death. Born in Jones county, Mr. Hanken was married to Margaret Scheer of Langworthy. They became the parents of four children, three of whom survive their father. They are Mrs. Harm J. Dirks and Mrs. Frank Husman of Center Junction, and Mrs. Arthur Lake of Popejoy A son, Wesley Hanken, passed away in 1934. Mr. Hanken was also survived by the following brothers: Daniel Hanken of Cherokee; John B. Hanken of Center Junction; Fred Hanken of Langworthy, and the following grandchildren: Mrs. August Schrader of Scotch Grove; Walter Norris and George Dirks, Scotch Grove; Leroy Dirks, Anamosa; Thelma Husman, Center Junction; and Wesley Jr., Virginia, Naomi, Catherine and David Hanken of Center Junction; great grandchildren, Audry and Donald Schrader of Scotch Grove and Kermit Dirks of Anamosa. A sister, Mrs. John H. Eden, and two brothers. B.H. Hanken and William H. Hanken preceded him in death. The death of Mr. Hanken came as a decided shock to his relatives and the residents of the community in which he lived. He had been suffering for some time with heart trouble, but the same was not considered of a serious character. He had suffered an attack of pneumonia last year, and had been treated at the McDonald hospital. The day before his death he came to Monticello to consult with a physician regarding his health. He was a man of a quiet nature, and regarded as highly successful in his business undertakings.
