Stephenson, in Chelsea township, at 10:50 a. m. Wednesday, November 20, 1907. Willard B. Stephenson, aged 18 years, 3 months and 9 days. Willard was born in Champaign county, Illinois, August 11, 1889, removing with his parents to Chelsea township in this county when only six months old. Here he has been reared, growing up to be a young man of good habits and pleasing character. He was a student in the Geneva high school and but for the illness which terminated his life he would have been a member of this year's graduating class. He was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Paul and members of that organization are assisting with the funeral arrangements and will act as pall bearers. The funeral will take place from the Methodist church in Geneva at 1:30 p. m. today, the funeral party leaving the residence in Chelsea township one hour earlier. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. L. G. Parker of Osceola, former pastor of the Geneva Methodist church, assisted by Rev. Thomas Griffiths of the Geneva Congregational church. The interment will be in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal November 22nd, 1907 page 2. ALSO: The funeral of Willard B. Stephenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Stephenson of Chelsea Township, was held from the Geneva Methodist Church Friday afternoon at half past one o’clock, and interment was in the Geneva Cemetery. The Queen Esthers and Brotherhood of St. Paul, of which latter organization the deceased was a member, had charge of the funeral arrangements and had decorated the alter and chancel railing at the church very beautifully with smilax and the quantity of flowers, both loose and set pieces sent by relatives and friends. A double quartet composed of Mrs. Alfred Rosenquist, Misses Grace Donisthorpe, Bertha Young and Beth Huston and Messrs. C. and Emmett Sherrard, Alva Nicholas and Lyle Cumberland, furnished the music with Miss Maude Stevens officiating at the organ. The pallbearers were selected from among his close companions and were Hugh Hadsell, Harold Shickley, John and Harry Curtiss, Edward Nicholas and Fred Cobb. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. L. G. Parker, who came from Osceola at the request of the family, and was assisted by Rev. Dr. C. M. Shepherd, pastor of the church, and Rev. Thomas Griffiths of the Congregational Church. Rev. Parker spoke first, taking for his text, John 13:7: “What I doeth thou know not now, but thou shalt know hereafter.” Rev. Parker was followed by Rev. Griffiths while Dr. Shepherd offered prayer. The high school was dismissed for the afternoon, and the students attended the funeral in a body. Deceased was a pupil in the high school and but for his fatal illness, would have been a member of this year’s graduation class. Out of respect to his sister, Miss Helen Stephenson, who is a teacher in the Shickley schools, the board of education of that town, dismissed the schools for the entire day and the teachers came to Geneva on the noon train to attend the funeral. In the party was Prof. Gilmore and Misses Heald, Sheppard and Green, Miss Sheppard, having acted as substitute for Miss Stephenson for a couple of weeks. Others from out of the city in attendance at the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stephenson of Franklin, the former a brother of Mr. Stephenson, George Babb of Champaign City, Ill., a brother of Mrs. Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Limbach of Shickley, cousins of the family and Mr. and Mrs. Joe West of Belvidere, old friends. The church was filled with relatives and friends, many of them accompanying the remains to their final resting place. The Geneva Gazette November 28th 1907 page 3.
