Harlan, Respected Farmer Loses Life While Walking on Railroad Track Logan people were shocked Thursday evening to learn that one of the well known citizens of the community had been struck by an Illinois Central freight train and instantly killed a short distance south of town. Mr. Harlan was walking from Logan to his home on the old A. Longman farm south of town, as the railroad gives a more direct route to his home than does the highway. He has for many years been quite deaf and as the wind was from the south it is likely that he did not hear the train until it was upon him. The force of the blow killed him instantly without a doubt, but he was not mangled or crushed so as to be noticeable. William A. Harlan was born August 4, 1866 in Clarke county, Iowa. When a young man he came to this county with his parents. His father was a minister of the Christian church and established the church in Logan. February 18, 1888 he was married to Lillie B. Vanarsdol. Five children were born to them, three sons and two daughters. One son, Ruby B. was killed in action October 11, 1918, in France, a member of F company, 20th Inf., First Division. Two sons Van and Will survive. There are also two daughters, two brothers and 11 grandchildren, besides the wife, left to mourn his taking away. William Harlan was a good man, honest and faithful to home and family. He was exceptionally well read, and kept himself informed on the activities of the world. He was long a resident of this community, but a few years ago went to Nebraska, where he lived for a few years, but returned to Iowa to make his home among those he knew best. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. L. Edwards. Mrs. Havens and Mrs. Johnson sang favorite hymns, with Miss Kathryn Logan at the piano. He was laid to rest in Logan cemetery.
