Read More	Nelson Gazette 1-15-1920 Page 1 Column 1 MARLENEE, William Alden was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, March 13, 1835; died at his home in Angus, January 3, 1920, being 84 years, 10 months, 10 days of age. He was married to Amanda Stotts October 17, 1858. To this union seven children were born: Louise, Laurie, Ina, Frona, Bertha, William and David. Laurie and Frona passed away in the year 1895. The faithful wife passed away on September 18, 1918. Mr. Marlenee served his country, a loyal soldier for over three years, in Co. I, 29th Iowa Infantry Volunteers. When his beloved country needed him he volunteered, not waiting 'till he was called. He was a man of strictly honest principles, loved and respected by all who knew him. He came to this county when there were no laid roads or fences. Edgar, Superior and Nelson were not thought of. The nearest trading point was Hebron or Sutton. Buffalo, deer, antelope and wild turkeys were plentiful. He came immediately after the Indian massacre. He ran the first saw mill in the county and helped to build the homes that sheltered the families through the great April blizzard, the early settlers know so well. Will M. his son was the second white child born in the county. The present generation little realizes the great integrity and manliness of those early pioneers. Mustered Aug. 20, 1862. Mustered out Aug. 10, 1865, New Orleans, La. Jarret E. Marlenee Age 19. and John Marlenee, age 18,(probably brothers of William)same residence and nativity enlisted into same company of Co I 29th Iowa Infantry. Jarret died of disease at Helena, Arkansas. John was taken prisoner at Battle of Terre Noir, Arkansas. Returned to company Jan 7, 1865. Mustered out May 23 1865 Davenport,Iowa. He was nearly eight-five years old at the time of his death. He was well known to the people of this county, and he at one time served as sheriff of the county. The funeral occurred Tuesday, and was conducted by Rev. Lemmon.
