June 29, 1886, near Guttenberg in Jefferson Twp., Sec. 18, in Clayton County on a farm located in the Miner's Creek area. He attended school district no. 1, known as the Miner's Creek School nearly two miles from the farm where he grew up and later operated. He was a member of the Noack Orchestra and also the Guttenberg Municipal Band. His parents left the farm shortly before his marriage to Louise Amelia Becker, daughter of Christ and Louise Weideman Becker, at the home of her parents in Guttenberg. Louise Amelia Becker b. May 26, 1889, on a farm in Millville Twp. She attended Jolly Ridge School and remained at home to help with farm work until age 18. She then applied for work at the Glover Overall Factory in Guttenberg and was employed there until her marriage to William Bittner. The ceremony was performed by Rev. John Janzig of St. John's Lutheran Church on March 8, 1910. To this union one daughter b. on June 10, 1917 and christened Iva Roma Florence Bittner. She was reared on the same farm and attended the same school as her father before her. She also attended Guttenberg School. Upon the death of her father on Sept. 28, 1929, she and her mother moved to Guttenberg. There, they found work at local cafes and later on were notified of job openings at the American Pearl Button Co. Iva continued her employment there until her marriage to Roland Parson. Louise d. May 14, 1937. -- written by daughter Iva Bittner Parson Obituary: Guttenberg Press, IA, Thursday, October 3, 1929, p1, c1 William Bittner Dies At Dubuque Hospital Was Forty Three Years Old, Funeral Held Tuesday Afternoon William Bittner, a lifelong resident of this community, died at Finny hospital at Dubuque at last Saturday morning at 4:30 o'clock , after a week's illness, at the age of 43 years, 2 months and 29 days. Mr. Bittner became suddenly ill on Sunday, September 22, and was at once taken to Dubuque, where he submitted to an operation soon after arriving there.(note:Per his daughter, Iva Bittner Parson, William died due to a ruptured appendix.) Deceased was born on a farm in Jefferson twp., Clayton Co., Iowa, on June 29, 1886. He was married at Guttenberg to Miss Louise Becker on March 9, 1910. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Bittner settled on a farm in this township, where deceased spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Bittner was a kind and true husband, father, son, brother and friend, and he will be sadly missed by all. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Ivanella, at home; his father, Emanuel Bittner, of Jefferson township, two brothers, Realto Bittner, of Millville township, and John Bittner, of Jefferson township; one sister, Mrs. Louis Heins, of Luana, and numerous other relatives and friends. He also was an able musician, at one time being a member of the Guttenberg Military band and other musical organizations here. The body was brought to Guttenberg on Saturday and then taken to his home in Jefferson township, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. R. Belter, pastor of St. Paul's United Lutheran church , on Tuesday afternoon. Interment was made in the City cemetery. The funeral was largely attended.
