Memorial contributions have been established to the Jefferson County Conservation Board, of which Mr. Briggs was a founding member. The son of Jesse Curtis and Helen Marie Carolina Will Briggs, he was born at Fairfield on Jan. 18, 1908. The family moved to a farm southeast of Fairfield when he was 4, and also lived in Libertyville and Eldon. He returned to Fairfield in 1928, working for Turney Wagon Factory before going into business for himself with Briggs Plumbing and Heating, which he owned for more than 40 years. He married Ida Jane Faulkner on June 3, 1934, in Fairfield. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1996. In addition to helping found the conservation board and serrving as a director for many years, Mr. Briggs served in the Iowa National Guard for 12 years and had served as company commander of the State Guard militia prior to World War II. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Fairfield Camping Club. He was "Grandpa Bill" to the third grade at Washington Elementary School in the adopt-a-grandparent program. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Harwood of Fairfield; two sons, William Michael of Fairfield and John Francis of Howell, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Cleo H. Myers, Mary Johanah Jones, Leona Belle Burkett and Norma Vera Schockley; and three brothers, Curtis H., Francis and Jess Woodrow in infancy.
