(Death notice in the Elgin (IA) Echo, Thursday, May 6, 1971, page 1) * * * Obituary Of William Klingman William Klingman, youngest child of Martin Klingman, Junior and Laura Johnson Klingman, born August 2, 1885, in Highland Township, Clayton Co., Iowa, and died at the Postville Memorial Hospital May 2, 1971, at the age of 85 years, and 9 months. He received his early his early education in the rural school of the community. In 1902, he enrolled at Upper Iowa University at Fayette where he studied Business Administration. Later, he attended Highland Park College of Engineering. In June of 1910, he, and his father, sister Nora, and brother Albert, moved to Timber Lake, South Dakota, where Martin Klingman, Jr. had taken a homestead. While there, he joined the I.O.O.F. Lodge in 1918, and was recording secretary for three years, and was also a Past Grand of that Lodge. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge at Timber Lake and was raised to the degree of Master Mason. He transferred his membership from Timber Lake Lodge to the Silver Leaf Lodge at Elgin, Iowa where he remained a member until his death. In 1922, he returned to Elkader, Iowa where he was engaged as a carpenter for one year. He then returned to Highland where he did farm work and carpentering. In 1936, he with his brother Albert moved to Elgin, Iowa where he had lived ever since. He was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Elgin and served several years as a Steward of the Church. On June 1, 1951, he was appointed Custodian of the church and grounds and held that position until April 29, 1971 when he was stricken in the church he loved so much. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Alice Yearous and Nora Ripke; and two brothers, Charles M. Klingman and Albert Klingman; and one nephew, Arthur Yearous. Survivors include Mrs. Eugene Woodworth of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Mrs. David Bartelma of Boulder, Colorado; Ray Klingman, Lee Klingman, Lee Klingman and Mrs. Hilda Little of Volga, Ia.; Fred Klingman of Arlington, Ia., Mrs. Lucian Donlon of Elkader, and Mrs. Paul DeVall of Grandview, Washington. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Delbert Dawes, were held at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, May 5, 1971, at two p.m. Music and songs were given by Karen Olson, organist, and Methodist Men's quartet. C. B. Schori, Arden Greener, John Tillotson and Edward Klingman. Burial was made at the Illyria Cemetery. Pall bearers were Robert Wilson, Lyle Light, Lawrence Knudson, Henry McMillan, Eugene Schori and Allan Habeger. (obit in the Elgin (IA) Echo, Thursday, May 13, 1971, page 2)
