December 23, 1920 - The Pocahontas Record - Wm C. Wolkenhauer was born February 8, 1860 in Cook county, Illinois. He was the youngest in a family of four children. In his infancy the deceased was received into the covenant of the triune God through baptism and in later years instructed in the Christian faith as it is professed by the Lutheran church of which he remained a faithful member to his end. In the year 1888 he was united in marriage to Minnie Forke of Itasca, Du Page county, Illinois. The young couple immediately went westward and settled on their present farm, three miles north of Pocahontas. Mr and Mrs. Wolkenhauer experienced some of the pioneer hardships in this county. Their endurance, diligence and trust in God, however, were abundantly rewarded. This union was blessed with twelve children. Three daughters, Rosa, Martha, and Mrs Albert Martens preceded the father in death. The surviving children were all present at the funeral. They area Edward, William, Minnie, John, George, Fred, Mrs Henry DeWall from Pocahontas, Mrs Olga Peterson, Gilmore City, Mrs Henry Schweitzer, Bensonville, IL. Mr Wolkenhauer was engaged in farming ever since he came to this country. At various times he held public offices, being township trustee 2 years, justice of peace 5 years, assessor 4 years, and school director 15 years. He was one of the founders of the Lutheran congregation at Pocahontas and for many years one of its deacons, always having its welfare at heart. In general the deceased enjoyed good health until a few years ago. This summer it became evident that he was a very sick man. At first it was difficult to determine his ailment. His condition finally forced him to enter the Mercy hospital at Fort Dodge. On the 27th of October an operation was performed, but the surgeons found his condition to be such that they were unable to help him. The dreadful disease of cancer had progressed too far already. It meant for him several weeks of patient suffering and waiting. Mr. Wolkenhauer bore his cross in a Christian spirit and prepared himself for the last great struggle. His chief care being this, to be faithful to the principles of Christian faith which he had endeavored to keep from his childhood. Oh how grateful he was for the comfort offered him from the Divine word and for the intercessions made in his behalf. Two weeks ago last Sunday he was brought here from Fort Dodge a special nurse was engaged to care for him. The family did what was in their power to alleviate his sufferings. Last Saturday at 5:30 p.m. his soul departed in to the blessed beyond. He leaves to mourn his departure from this world besides wife and children, two brothers: Theo, Lyman, Col., Fred, Bensonville, Illinois, and one sister, Mrs. Anton Schoenberger, Pocahontas, and many other relatives and friends. The deceased attained the age of 60 years, 10 months, and 10 days. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon and the body was laid to rest in Summit Hill cemetery. Those present from a distance were Mrs. Schelp, Chicago, IL, Henry Schweitzer, Bensonvllle, IL., Frank Forke, Colton, S.D., Alb Wolkenhauer, Madison, S.D. Andreas, Schantz, Okla.
