Description	:	William H Gerke, a well known farmer living three miles east of State Center, was found dead in his barn about 11:30 Saturday morning, by Eldon Hooker, the hired man. Mr Gerke had been in the basement of his home during the early forenoon assisting the members of his family in cutting seed potatoes preparatory to planting. Read More	William H Gerke, a well known farmer living three miles east of State Center, was found dead in his barn about 11:30 Saturday morning, by Eldon Hooker, the hired man. Mr Gerke had been in the basement of his home during the early forenoon assisting the members of his family in cutting seed potatoes preparatory to planting. Shortly after 9 o'clock he went to the barn, being followed soon by his young son, who was the last person to see him alive. Mr Gerke was lying in the hay and told his son to return to the house which he did, but neglected to inform his mother of what he had seen. About an hour and a half later, Mr Hooker coming from the field for dinner, started into the barn with his team and found his employer dead in the day. From all appearances Mr Gerke had died about 10 o'clock. Coroner Jay was immediately notified, but being unable to respond dispatched Sheriff Nicholson and Justice of the Peace Peek to act for him. Although the circumstances were some what mysterious and there were evidences of suicide, upon careful investigation and after consulting with Dr I D Kauffman, who is the family physician, it was decided that no inquest would be necessary. The cause of the death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr Gerke had not been well for some time, being troubled with a great deal with intense pains in his head and side. Frequently he seemed to suffer from an acute disorder which indicated a pressure on the brain. At these times he became very melancholy and is know to have threatened suicide. Three weeks ago while in one of these spells he was taken to the sanitarium at Nevada for treatment. After remaining there a week he returned home apparently much improved. On the morning of his death he made no complaint of feeling other than in his usual health. Mr Gerke was 48 years of age, being born on the home place two miles south of Clemons, where his father, William Gerke, now resides. He is survived by his wife and four children, besides three brothers and one sister. The latter are L C and August, who live on farms near Clemons; Henry who lives south of State Center, and Rosa, who lives with her father. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by Rev A J Boehm, of the French Grove Lutheran church. Interment was made in the church cemetery. May 5, 1910 State Center Enterprise.
