Richman, Pioneer, Participated in Memorial Day Festivity Vermillion, June 10 – Taps sounded for one of the three Civil War veterans left living in Vermillion Sunday when William C. Richman, 86-year-old pioneer, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Beulah Doan. He had lived continuously here for more than 60 years. Scarcely in his teens when the Civil war broke out, he enlisted as a drummer boy in a New York regiment when 15 years of age. He took part in the major engagements at Petersburg and Danville and was on Clover Hill when General Lee surrendered. Never wounded and never taken prisoner, he was, however, permanently deafened by the cannons' roar at Petersburg. After his war service he returned to within a few miles of his birthplace in Indiana, where he lived until he came west to Sioux City in 1872. Remaining there two years, he came on to the little pioneer Dakota territory settlement of Vermillion, then on the bottom lands south of the city's present site. When the town was swept away by the flood waters of the Missouri, he helped establish the present city where he has ever since resided. He followed his tinsmith and sheet metal trades until about ten years ago when he retired. He was able to participate in the Memorial day activities here and while his death was sudden it was not unexpected as he had been in failing health for some time. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mable Hart of Redwood Falls, Minn., and Mrs. Clarice Anderson and Mrs. Doan of Vermillion; and four sons, Harold Richman and Henry Richman of Newell, S.D.; Carl Richman of Pierre, S.D.; and Arthur Richman of Eugene, Oregon.
