William and Martha Jenkiins Dowd's children included Viola Elizabeth, William S., Amelia, Rosa May, Mary Arilla, Lydia Ann and Levi. He did not have children with any of his other wives. William E. Dowd was born in Athens County, Ohio and moved to Indiana and Iowa with his family. When he was 25, he joined Co. E, 10th Illinois Infantry on August 30, 1861 at Oquawka, Illinois. He gave his residence as Henderson County, Illinois. He and Martha were married at this time. He was described as 5'5" with red hair, grey eyes, and a light complextion. His occupation was listed as farmer. He was discharged on Oct. 13, 1862 for a disability. He re-enlisted in the same company on 1 January, 1864 in Rossville, Georgia. He was discharged 4, July, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. The family had moved to Iowa and stayed in the general area of Jefferson County, where William died in Fairfield. His daughter Rosa and son Levi predeased him and were buried in Ollie Cemetery, Ollie, Keokuk County, Iowa along with their mother, Martha Jenkins Dowd. Obituary: Fairfield Ledger Page 6, Col. 4 May 2, 1906 William E. Dowd died at his home on South D Street Monday evening, after an illness of three or four days. He was a native of Athens county, O., seventy years of age, and had lived in Fairfield for several years. He was married here December 12th, 1903, to Rebecca Howard, and his death make Mrs Dowd a widow for the fifth time. Mr. Dowd has several children by a former marriage. Funeral services will be held at the Christian church today at 2:30. Obituary: Jefferson County Republican, Friday May 4, 1906 Page 1, Column 3 William E. Doud (sic) died at his home in the southeast part of town Monday night. He was an old soldier. Funeral services, were held at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. H. Littleton.
