William Straub was born in Tilsenburg, Canada, September 15, 1854, and passed away at his home in Tipton, Iowa., Jan. 20, 1934, aged 79 years, 4 months, and 5 days. His father died when he was a baby. When he was 5 years old he came with his mother to the United States of America, settling in Scott county. He was adopted at this time by an uncle. When Wm. Straub was 16 years old he moved to Muscatine county. Here he grew to manhood. On October 28, 1875, he was married to Mary E. Bond and they began their married life together in Muscatine county. To this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter. The daughter preceded her father in death eight years ago. Brother Straub was converted early in life in the German Methodist church. When he moved to Cedar county in the fall of 1885 he united with the South Bethel church. Later when he moved east of Lime City he transferred his membership to the United Brethren church of Lime City. He was superintendent of the Sunday school for a number of years. He removed to Tipton in March 1907, where he united with the Reformed paired he did not care to attend the public services of the church, but still retained his keen interest in the Kingdom of God and the Lord's work. The memory of a father's prayer and of the family alter will always be in the hearts of his family. He loved his home and his family. His guide thru life was the Golden Rule. In the passing of Wm. Straub, there is taken a loving father, a kind and helpful neighbor and friend, a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who mourn his passing are his life companion, his devoted and loving wife, and three sons, Tolbert M. and Albert W. Straub of Tipton, and Geo W. Straub of Mt. Vernon; also 11 grandchildren, nieces and friends, and a host of old neighbors who will miss their pleasant visits with him on the street and in the home. So be my passing My task accomplished and the long day done My wages taken and in my heart Some late lark singing Let me be gathered to the quiet west The sunset splendid and serene. Death seems but a covered way Which opens into light. Wherein no blinded child can stray Beyond the Father's sight. And so the shadows fall apart And so the west winds play And all the windows of my heart I open to the day.
