COULTER BLAST VICTIM Local Man Is Killed While Blasting Stumps on Farm Near Homer Friday. FIND BODY SATURDAY Funeral Is Held This Afternoon From the Family Residence. William E. Coulter, a retired farmer living on west Bank street, was accidentally killed while blasting stumps Friday with dynamite on his farm near Homer. The exact time of his death will never be known for his body was not discovered until late Saturday afternoon. He was working alone. Funeral services for Mr. Coulter were held this afternoon at the family home and burial was made in the Stratford cemetery. Rev. Thomas B. Collins officiated. Mr. Coulter went down to the farm near Homer Friday shortly past noon and obtained some dynamite with which he planned to blow out some stumps in one of the oat fields. It is believed he had blown out two stumps and was getting ready to blast out the third when the fatal accident happened. His body was found near the stump and was badly mangled by the terrific explosion. Falls Over Stump? In reconstructing the accident, it is believed Mr. Coulter had touched off the fuse to the dynamite and then stumbled or fell over the stump and was unable to get out of the danger zone before the blast. Other say that it is possible that he suffered a heart attack just as he lit the fuse. Coroner E.W. Slater, of Jewell, after examining the body declared that no inquest would be held, saying the man came to his death by accidental means by a discharge of dynamite while blasting out stumps. Mr. Coulter's failure to appear at home Friday night did not lead to any uneasiness on the part of his family, those in this city believing he was spending the night near Homer at one of his friend's homes. However, when he failed to appear by Saturday noon a search was started and two sons of Stratford came up near Homer and saw their father's automobile standing in the road. They went over into the field and soon came upon the body. Born in Illinois Mr. Coulter would have been 68 years old Aug. 25 having been born in 1861. His birthplace was in Rochester, Ill., but he spent most of his years in Hamilton county having moved here with his parents when only seven years of age. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1923. Surviving Mr. Coulter are seven children and several brothers. The children are: Mrs. D.C. Mitti, of Bremen, Ind.; E.S. Coulter, of Melcher; George G. and James R. Coulter, of Stratford, and Fred E., Leo N. and Roy W. Coulter, of Webster City.
