Harper, son of Samuel and Nancy Harper, was born May 8, 1875, at Winterset, Tama (Madison) County, Iowa, and departed this life at St. Joseph's hospital, Concordia, Kansas, November 1, 1960, at the age of eighty-five years, five months, and twenty-three days. He came to Kansas with his parents at the age of three years, and since that time, with the exception of a short residence in Osborne County, has spent his entire lifetime in Cloud County. He was the last surviving member of his family, which consisted of two brothers and three sisters. On October 10, 1895, he was united in marriage to Mabel Carey at Concordia, Kansas. To this union was born one son, Lauren, who passed away October 6, 1928. His wife passed away in 1913. In 1915 he was united in marriage to Hannah Reed, who passed away June 5, 1946. In 1947 he was united in marriage to Lizzie Akins. Col. Harper, as he was best known, lived a long and active life, giving freely of his time to public and civic affairs. He was one of the pioneer auctioneers of this section of the state. In conjunction with his auction work, he was an accomplished livestock man. He continued these endeavors until his health failed. Mr. harper was also prominent in political circles throughout the area. He served for several years as chairman of the Cloud County Republican Central Committee. He also served several years as a member of the State Legislature. In all his dealings, Col. Harper was honest and straight forward, which accounts for his many true and loyal friends. Col. Harper's wit, knowledge, and keen understanding will be sorely missed by his family and the community. He is survived by his widow, Lizzie; two granddaughters, Maxine Jones and Jean Bonneau, and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Dean Funeral Home in Glasco, Thursday, November 3, 1960, at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon, with the Rev. John Baker officiating. Pallbearers are Dr. W. A. Adams, C. H. Barrett, W. F. Yenni, Albert Grittman, Marvin Jordan, and Leland Chapin. Interment will be in Glasco cemetery.
