Description	:	William H Welch, prominent attorney from Logan, Iowa, died suddenly at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa on Tuesday, September 17, 1985. He was born June 21, 1919, in Logan, IA, to William Philip and Verna Ruth Coulthard Welch. After graduating from Logan High School in 1936, he attended the University of South Dakota, followed by Chattanooga College of Law, graduated and was admitted to practice law before the Iowa and Federal Courts in June of 1941. He was born June 21, 1919, in Logan, IA, to William Philip and Verna Ruth Coulthard Welch. After graduating from Logan High School in 1936, he attended the University of South Dakota, followed by Chattanooga College of Law, graduated and was admitted to practice law before the Iowa and Federal Courts in June of 1941. He married Maxine Louise Martens on August 28, 1941. To this union three children were born; William Henry, Jeri Anne and Mary Lou. During World War II he was a civilian pilot instructor for the military, prior to service in the United States Army Air Corps. Upon his return from the service in 1946, he entered the practice of law, and in 1948, was elected and served one term in the Iowa Legislature. During his career, Bill practiced with his father, "Old Bill', who established the Welch Law Firm in 1916, his sister Marjorie Welch Booher, and his brother, Ed. His aunt, Catherine Welch Armstrong, is also an attorney and had close ties with the firm. Bill, in his professional as well as his private life, was an effective advocate, and dedicated to the service of those in need. He was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Democratic party, and other community, civic, political and humanitarian organizations. Bill is survived by Maxine Welch; son, Bill, of Logan, IA; daughters Jeri Hopkins of Plattsmouth, NE, and Mary Lou (Terry) Plummer of Persia, IA; 5 grandchildren, Darren and Jason Hopkins, and Tim, Jody and Mindy Plummer; brother Ed Welch of Omaha, NE; sister, Patricia Selander of Sioux City, IA; aunts Catherine Armstrong of Logan and Rita Utman of Arcadia, FL; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William P and Verna Welch; sister Marjorie Booher; infant brother, Philip Aaron; and infant grandson, Christopher Plummer. A prayer service was held Thursday, September 19th at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Logan. Funeral Services were Friday, September 20th, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Logan, with burial at Valley View Cemetery near Persia, IA. ********************************************************** WILLIAM HUGH WELCH, who is associated with his father, William Phillip Welch, in the practice of law in his native city of Logan, has made an auspicious beginning in public life as well, representing his county in the Iowa State Legislature. Born June 21, 1919, Mr. Welch attended the local public schools and graduated from the Logan High School in 1936. In the summers during both his high school years and his subsequent university course, he helped defray his expenses by working on the farm owned by his mother, Mrs. Verna Coulthard Welch. He also worked for Dr. R. G. Moore of Dunlap during the 1937 session of the Iowa Legislature. He then became a student at the University of South Dakota, in Vermillion, where he remained for a year. Later transferring to the Chattanooga College of Law, he graduated from that institution in June, 1941, with the degree of Bachelor of Laws. At law college he was a member of Delta Theta Phi fraternity. Mr. Welch first served, during the World War II period, in the civilian pilot training program, graduating from Randolph Field and later teaching at Cimarron Field. He then entered the United States Army Air Corps. He served until January, 1946, when he received his discharge from Luke Field. Returning to Logan, he became associated with his father, William Phillip Welch, in the practice of law. In 1948, William Hugh Welch was elected to represent Harrison County in the Fifty-third General Assembly of Iowa, as State Representative. Mr. Welch is a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, and is a communicant of the Catholic Church. On August 28, 1941, William Hugh Welch married Maxine Martens, a native of Persia, Iowa. She attended Dana College at Blair, Nebraska, and later Simpson College, and taught in the public schools for a short time before her marriage.
