Yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, funeral services were conducted for him in the Greenside Avenue United Presbyterian Church. It was the end of nearly 41 years' connection with The Notes. He was aged 55. Mr. Fee, one of the eight children of John and Hannah (Quinn) Fee, was born the Fee farm near McConnell's Mills, Chartiers Township, October 16, 1868. He attended school irregularly (as irregularly as he could) but he pored over the weekly newspapers of the day, learning more from them than from school books. It was shortly after his fourteenth birthday that he came to Canonsburg. His brother, David H. Fee, had obtained an interest in and then ownership of the Weekly Notes. It was in 1882, that Will Fee came to Canonsburg and began his service with this newspaper. In those days he was "printer's devil," but he bought a dictionary and from it he gained a sound knowledge of the correct use of words. As the years went by he learned the various branches of the printer's craft, growing more and more, however, into the handling of the news. A biography of Mr. Fee would be a history of The Notes. In 1892 he became a partner with his brother and the firm was known as that D.H. & W.H. Fee. Although Canonsburg at that time was not a fraction of its present size, the idea of a daily newspaper had taken root in the mind of Mr. Fee as well as the minds of others and at last one day in 1893 the first copy was issued. Two youngsters were hired at 50 cents a day to distribute free copies as samples, and thus was born the tiny daily paper which, some years later had entirely superseded the weekly edition which, at that time, was in a flourishing condition. There were no type-setting machines then, and many items were gathered by Mr. Fee and set in type direct from the case, without first having been written as copy. In 1897 Mr. Fee served as a clerk in the transcribing room of the House, at Harrisburg, having arrived there only shortly before the burning of the old building. When the Notes Publishing and Printing Company was formed in 1905 Mr. Fee became Vice President of the company and news editor of the paper. By this time the handling of news claimed all his time - the day of newspapers with "patent" (two pages printed elsewhere) had passed. It had become a task and a difficult task to collect and prepare the news of the day, local and "telegraph," and it was his shoulders which bore the chief burden. His sole thought was to turn out the best possible sort of newspaper. How well he succeeded is appreciated chiefly by other members of his craft. Mr. Fee seldom wrote an editorial - that was not his work. His task was to get the news. And through his hands, across all these years, have passed the news stories which have brought amusement and interest, joy and sorrow, to the people of this community. It was while Mr. Fee was in Harrisburg that he suffered the first attack of the malady which eventually was to terminate in his death. At that time, the seizure yielded speedingly to mild treatment, but seldom for the following 25 years was he entirely free of discomfort. As the years passed, the trouble became a very severe attack, but treatment brought quick relief. The next year he had a more severe attack and it was longer before he found relief. Again last January he suffered a more violent seizure, and again a longer period was required for recovery. When he suffered the illness of two weeks ago, it was ten or twelve days before he reached the point where suffering or extreme discomfort had ceased. At that time it seemed that some preventive measures must be taken immediately for fear that the next attack would be even more severe - or worse. Physicians agreed on what possibly was the simplest treatment, in the hope that it would deter or prevent another illness and this was attempted. Although it was less severe than some of the treatments that Mr. Fee had undergone previously, during severe illnesses, it produced a collapse when attempted last Saturday morning at his home, Glencairn, Peters Township. But Mr. Fee regained consciousness after a half hour and it was not until three hours or less before his death that his condition became easily apparent. Even then, he seemed to have a chance, but for an hour before he passed away there was no hope. A half hour of pain was followed by a half hour of calm and at 7:38 p.m. he simply slipped away. Sabbath evening, the Rev. Dr. A.B. Brown conducted a 20-minute service at the Fee home in Peters Township for the neighbors. On Monday afternoon, at the service in the Greenside Church, the pastor, the Rev. Ross Hume, read the One Hundred and Twelfth Psalm and the comforting words of Jesus to the sisters of Lazarus. The Rev. Dr. James H. Grier, the former pastor, spoke of Mr. Fee's life in the community, and the Rev. Dr. J.C. Kistler, formerly of Houston, offered prayer. A quartet, composed of members of the Bible Class of Greenside Sabbath school, sand the Seventy-third and the Twenty-third Psalms. The pall bearers were W.R. Ebeling and Elmer Malone, of The Notes; O.C.C. Pollock and Walter Wagner of the Men's Bible Class, to which Mr. Fee belonged; Walter Connor, of the Peter's Township community, and Charles Fee, a nephew. Burial was in Oak Spring Cemetery, where the final prayer was made by Dr. Brown. Mr. Fee leaves his widow, Mrs. Julia Humphrey Fee, whom he married October 28, 1891, and one son, Dwight Fee. He leaves also these brothers, David H., his associate all these years; John N., of Houston, and Samuel, Ellis and Harry of Chartiers Township. A sister, Mrs. Matthew Cain, died in 1905.
