SOLES On the evening of Monday, Feb. 9th, 1925, at 9 o'clock, just as he was preparing for a night's rest, the death angel stole in and bore away the pure spirit of our loving and devoted father, W. J. Soles. He was born and reared in Mathews Co., near Soles, Va., and had reached the age of 72 years, 8 months and 9 days. He united with Mathews Chapel M. E. Church early in life but later had his membership transferred to Locust Grove M. E. Church and lived a christian life. He loved to attend church and take part in the services of which he was able to do up to the least Sunday he lived. He had had several attacks of heart failure but no one realized the seriousness of his condition as he was so energetic and seldom gave up to his feelings. In fact, he attended to his work as usual the day he died and after the evening meal, read his paper and at 8:30 retired to his room. His daughter, Estelle (Mrs. Brown) went in to make him comfortable for the night and to see if he wanted anything, as she did each night before she retired. He told her he felt as well as usual, but later she saw his light and came down to see what was wrong and there he sat in his chair in a comfortable position and his bed untouched. She called to him and he made no reply. His spirit had taken its flight without warning. She was alone in the house but when she gave the alarm, kind friends and neighbors came to do what they could. But God called him home to rest at the end of the day. He was a kind neighbor with a pleasant word for everyone, a loving father and a devoted husband. His funeral services were conducted at the home by his pastor, Rev. D. W. Jackson on Thursday, Feb. 12th, at 1 o'clock and the remains laid to rest in Locust Grove Cemetery beside his wife, who preceded him there three years ago today. The pall-bearers were: V. C. Soles, E. C. Sutton, C. W. Edwards, Edward Sadler, John Soles, Jr., and J. A. Gray, nephews. The many and beautiful floral tributes bore testimony of how greatly he was loved. He leaves to mourn his loss five daughters, Mesdames H. G. Thompson, W. S. Brown, J. H. Howlett, J. R. Callis, and R. R. Heilman; a young man to whom he had been a father since he was 7 years old, Charlie A. Daniel (adopted); three brothers, John Soles, Charlie Soles and A. E. Soles; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Fitchett and Mrs. C. H. Lewis; twelve grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. May God, who sustains all, in time of trouble, be our consolator and friend until there shall be a happy reunion in that better land where partings are unknown. ~ His children A second notice posted 19 Feb 1925 lists "One brother, John Soles; one sister, Mrs. Fitchett ..."
