He was a farmer. Dec 2, 1929 - Carroll Daily Herald - William J. Wills, prominent Carroll farmer for almost 50 years, died Saturday evening in St Anthony hospital. His death was a surprise to Carroll citizens, did not know that his illness was critical. Mr. Wills was taken ill last spring in Gerber, Calif., and after returning home to Carroll seemed better for a time. Later he went to St. Anthony hospital for treatment and then was able to return home, but he became ill again and was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, and died Saturday night. Death was due to Bright's disease. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 in the Methodist church the services being conducted by the Rev. Arthur Eastman, the pastor. Burial will be made in the city cemetery. The pall bearers will be E.J. Rogers, Arthur Pascoe, E. J. Osborne, Henry Doitch, William Pierce, and William Clements. William James Wills was born near Cuba City, Wis., March 9, 1875. When five years of age he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Wills, to Carroll county where he grew up in the Beulah community and became a member of the Beulah Methodist church. Most of his life was spent in the vicinity of Carroll where he farmed with intelligence and industry. He lived his faith and developed the integrity and steadfastness of character that won the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was a liberal giver to every worthy cause, a real neighbor to everyone and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. The greater part of the last 20 years he and his sister, Ida, have lived on his farm, five miles southwest of town, where they have enjoyed their comfortable modern home and the last three winters they spent on their ranch in northern California. They were making preparations to leave for Gerber in the near future, but the plans were interrupted by the hand of death. He leaves one brother and two sisters: Thomas B. Wills, Mrs. Walter Rogers and Miss Ida Wills, all of Carroll; together with many other relatives and friends who mourn his death.
