Sterling, Jr. Succumbs; Ill About Four Months Funeral Services Held Yesterday One of this city's most prominent business men and most esteemed residents, W. Jerome Sterling, Jr., passed away at his home on E. Chesapeake avenue, at shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday of this week, following an illness of about four months. He was forty-eight years of age. Mr. Sterling was the son of W. Jerome Sterling, Sr., retired business man and former Clerk of the Court of Somerset county, and the late Levenia C. Sterling. He was born in the Asbury section of Crisfield and with the exception of a few years during which his employment was elsewhere, spent his life-time here. As a young man he became associated with his father in the retail clothing business and later went into the seafood business with his brothers. For a number of years he was engaged in the retail seafood business in Washington, D. C. and in Florida and as a salesman for a large grocery concern. About eleven years ago, just after the city had been rebuilt following the disastrous fire of 1928, he decided to go into the clothing business for himself and established the Sterling Style Shop in the Daugherty Building, on the corner of Main and Fifth streets, later moving to the Webb Building, where until ill health confined him to his home several months ago, he had continued to do business. Mr. Sterling conducted an exclusive men's clothing store and because of his progressiveness and his genuine desire to serve his patrons faithfully and well, had built up a fine business. He was an honest, upright gentleman, who was widely known for his congeniality and his friendliness for all. For many years he had been a member of Crisfield Lodge No. 1044, B.P.O. Elks, and was a Past Trustee of that organization. Besides his father he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eleanor Hodge Sterling; an only son, Robert W. Sterling, of Albany, N.Y.; four sisters, Mrs. Lydia Purnell, of this city, Mrs. R.M. Carrico, of Clinton, Md., Mrs. Henry L. Benzick, of N.J. and Mrs. Malcolm Sterling, of Vienna, Md.; and three brothers, Lloyd Sterling and Benjamin H. Sterling, of this city, and McKinley Sterling, of Washington. Two half brothers, Milton Sterling and Irwin Sterling, of Crisfield, also survive. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Immanuel Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. J.R. Bicking, pastor of the church, and Rev. Charles M. Elderdice, of the Mt. Pleasant Church. Fellow members of the Elks' Lodge were in charge of the services. Interment was in the Asbury cemetery.
