JEROME STERLING WAS 96 YEARS OLD JUNE 7TH Mr. W. Jerome Sterling, one of the community's oldest and most highly regarded residents, died in the McCready Hospital here Tuesday afternoon. He had been ill for a number of years. He had observed his 96th birthday on June 7th. A native of the Asbury section, he was the son of the late Algie S. and Julia A. Tyler Sterling, both parents being members of Somerset County pioneer families. Mr. Sterling, in his younger days, was engaged in the seafood business and later in the hardware business, from which he retired some years ago. He was a prominent leader in the Republican party, and had been honored by the people of Somerset County by election to the offices of County Commissioner, Sheriff, and Clerk of the Court. He also was a member of the first City Council of Crisfield. For sixty-seven years Mr. Sterling had been a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147 of Masons, and had held several offices in that organization. He was a devoted member of Immanuel Methodist Church and a liberal contributor to its many activities. In the business world and as a private citizen Mr. Sterling was admired and respected. He was genial, liberal, a firm friend, and his wide range of activities brought him into contact with people in all parts of the county who became his warm friends. He always was interested in civic betterment and gave liberally of his time in services that helped individuals as well as the community as a whole. In every way he was a fine citizen who contributed a very great deal to the growth and well being of the community and county. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home here, with the Rev. George H. Moore, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Walter L. Beckwith, pastor of Asbury Methodist Church. Burial was in Asbury Church Cemetery. Bearers were members of the Masonic fraternity and Mason services were held at the grave. Mr. Sterling was twice married, his first wife having been Mrs. Lavinia (Sterling) Sterling, who died in 1918. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Josephine Church Sterling, and the following children: Benjamin H. Sterling and Mrs. Lydia Purnell, both of Crisfield; Mrs. Henry L.
