He had been about his work on Friday apparently in his usual health, and along with his wife had spent the evening at Mr. John Snell's. About two O'clock in the morning he was taken ill, passing away a couple of hours later. Deceased was born in Melancthon township, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Johnston, pioneer settlers of that township. He was married to Jean Davison, who survives him. An only daughter, Bertha, died about fourteen years ago. Three brothers and one sister also survive: George Johnston, Masonville; John M., Horning's Mills; Thomas, Toronto; Mrs. Wm. Fleming, Horning's Mills. Deceased was an active worker in Wesley United Church, Shelburne, of which he was an Elder, and for a number of years had been Superintendant of the Sunday School. The funeral took place to Shelburne cemetery, Monday afternoon under Orange auspices, private service at the late residence being followed by a public service in the Wesley Church. The funeral was largely attended, the church being crowded and in addition about two hundred school children marched quietly in at the close to view the remains. He had many friends among the school children apart from his work in the Sunday School, having been caretaker of the town school for years, although not filling that position at the time of his death, and his residence being located next to the school. The service was conducted by the Rev Levi Halfyard, pastor of Wesley Church. Rev. A. G. Donald, of Knox United Church, gave the Scripture reading; Rev. J.A. Leece, of Lambton Mills, a former pastor, led in prayer; Rev. Dr. J.T. Caldwell, of Toronto, a former pastor, gave a discourse in which he paid feeling tribute to the departed; Rev. W.J. Tribble and Rev. M. Davison also occupied seats on the pulpit platform. The pallbearers were six fellow officials of Wesley Church, Messrs. Wm. Shields, R.J. Finley, D.E. Dean, C. Johnston, W.K. Patterson and John Besley. - Shelburne Economist.
