Read More	Source: Dufferin County Museum & Archives Shelburne Free Press & Economist - March 4, 1943, GEORGE JOHNSTON: On Sunday, February 14th, 1943, Melancthon Township lost another old and respected resident in the person of George Johnston, who passed away at his home at Masonville in his 82nd year. He was a kind father and a good neighbor. Mr. Johnston was the third son of the late Thomas Johnston and Mary Jane Watson, and was born in Chinguacousy Township and brought by his parents at an early age to the farm on which he died. He was so attached to his home and farmland that following the death of his wife, the former Margaret Jane Clark, whom he married on Feb. 6th, 1895, and who predeceased him of Aug. 29, 1937, that he preferred to stay and keep the house for himself and his youngest son Ross rather than live elsewhere. He lived there with the help of his daughter for three and a half years, besides performing numerous other outdoor chores in a manner amazingly efficient to his family and friends. In the spring of 1942, when his health further declined, his son William and family came to live with him, leaving their own home nearby that the memories and associations of 77 years might not be broken. They cared for him and made his remaining days happy and content. He was well enough to spend Christmas and part of the holidays with members of the family in Toronto and Horning's Mills but failed to maintain his strength. He had spent only one day in bed before his death. His life had been spent in the original home erected by his parents when they came as pioneer settlers to the township. Here he had brought his bride and here their eleven children had been born and two had died in early childhood. Here so many happy family gatherings had taken place for three generations. Mr. Johnston had been an original Methodist, a Conservative and a member of the Orange Order. He is survived by an elder brother, John M., Horning's Mills, six daughters and three sons: Mrs. Jas. A. Brown, Mrs. George Fraser and Mrs. Carl Bates, Horning's Mills; Mrs. Hector Berry, Waldemar; Winnie, Cobourg; Isabel, Toronto; Thomas, Riverview; William, Masonville, and Ross, Toronto. Interment took place in Hornings Mill Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 17th, following service at the Gamble Funeral Home conducted by Rev. E. M. Burgess, of Horning's Mills. Pallbearers were Messrs. Roy Wattam, Harold Brown, Ross Horsley, Stuart Pearsall, Alex. Snider and Henry Fawcett. Floral tributes were: Pillow, the family; wreath, Brother Johnny; sprays, the grandchildren; Mrs. a. Brown, Harold and Mary; Mr. and Mrs. S. Pearsall; Mr. and Mrs. T. Baxter; Mr. and Mrs. F. Reid and Mr. and Mrs. E. Gilbert; Mr. and Mrs. Hector Berry; wreath, Mrs. Wood and Isabel. Flowerbearers were: Jacqueline and Barbara Johnston, Leslie and Tommy Fraser, Mary Brown and Grant Pearsall.
