This is a case where obituaries can be useful and confusing at the same time. -------- The following transcription is of the full obituary for William King Cathey (1854-1937) found published in the Fairfield Ledger on Friday, January 8, 1937. It is useful in providing detailed family information, and it refers to William's two living half-siblings as well. This obituary was found in the microfilm newspaper records at the Fairfield Public Library, Fairfield, Iowa by this contributor on March 21, 2010. Note: The Fairfield Ledger published a short, less detailed version on the day of Williams' death on January 5th (attached to this memorial). --------- Fairfield Ledger (Fairfield, Iowa) Friday January 8, 1937 OBITUARY WILLIAM KING CATHEY William King, son of William and Mary Cathey, was born in Jonesboro, Ill., July 29, 1854. At the age of 27, he enlisted in Co. F. 16th Infantry, US. Army. He was in active service for five years, being engaged in the Indian uprisings in the Old Indian Territory. He was married to Permelia Isabelle Weeks, Sept. 16, 1888. They, with three other families, traveled by covered wagon to the Indian Territory, which is now a part of the State of Oklahoma. One son, Arthur Blaine, was born Sept. 1, 1889, but passed away in infancy. Owing to the malaria pleague (sic. plague) in 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Cathey went to Murfreesboro, Tenn., where they resided for a short time. Later in 1890 they moved to Martinsburg (sic. Martinsburg, Keokuk/Wapello county borderline, Iowa), where five children were born. Here they lived until 1897 when the family took residence in Packwood (sic. Packwood, Jefferson County, Iowa). Mr. Cathey was engaged in the general hardware business. While there he united with the M. E. church. The family came to Fairfield (sic. Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa) in 1918, after their sons Thomas and Omar enlisted in the U.S. Navy for service during the World War. Mr. Cathey followed his trade here until twelve years ago when he retired from active business. He was an honorary member of the K. of P. lodge (sic. the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization). For the past four years he had been in failing health and since the death of his wife, August 1, 1936, he has gradually grown weaker. On the 26th day of December he was compelled to take to his bed. His five children remained by his bedside until his Maker called him home on January 5th. Mr. Cathey was a devoted father and companion, a friend to all and a man of sterling qualities. He leave to mourn his departure, two sons, Thomas and Omar, three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Caviness, Mrs. Lloyd Morrow and Mrs. Edward Donovan, fifteeen grandchildren, one great grandchild, one half-brother, Joseph Carns Cathey , of Martinsburg, and one half-sister, Mrs. Isaac Britton of Denver, Colo., besides a host of friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 7. Rev. B.G. Hankins (sic. special family note: B.G. Hankins was the father-in-law of Thomas Cathey - a son of William K. and Permelia Weeks Cathey) of Mt. Pleasant conducting & assisted by Rev. Gable of Fairfield. On account of the very stormy weather the K. of P. lodge closed the services. Pallbearers were K. of P. members. Songs used were "Some Day We Will Understand", "Going Down The Valley," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," a favorite with Mr. and Mrs. Cathey, the latter being sung as a solo by Ruth Larson (sic. either Larson or Watson; the print is obscured in the microfilm image). --------- The following was found published on the front page of the Fairfield Daily Ledger, Monday, May 2, 1927: "WAR VETERAN GETS INCREASE W.K. Cathey Served 5 Years On the Plains; Pension Is Doubled William K. Cathey, 403 North B street, recieved word last week from the secretary of interior stating that his pension from the Indaian War would be $40 per month in place of $20 as before. The change to become effective May 4. Mr. Cathey served five years continuously from 1878 until 1883 on the plains of Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska, with Co. F 16th U.S. Infantry. The soldiers were assigned to escort wagons of pioneers who were going west to take up settlements. Mr. Cathey received his frist pension two years ago with several hundred dollars back pay. Mr. Cathey's final honorable discharge was received at Fort Concha, Texas." -------- The following was found published in the social items of the Fairfield Daily Ledger on Wed. July 17, 1929: ".... Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Cathey received word this morning of the death of their little grandson, Thomas Gilbert Cathey , son of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Cathey of Wapello, who was born Saturday and passed away Tuesday evening. There will be short funeral services and burial this afternoon at Mediapolis (sic. Kossuth Cemetery, in Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa). Mr. and Mrs. Omar Cathey and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ewing, brother and sister of Mr. Cathey, went from here to attend the funeral."
