DAGGETT Wm. L. DAGGETT, an honored resident of this city, died at his home in the northeast part of town last Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. William Lovejoy DAGGETT was born in New Vineyard, Maine, March 11, 1827. He came west and settled in Delavan, Wisconsin, in 1850. He was married to Marie VROMAN in April, 1851. Mrs. DAGGETT died in October, 1860, leaving three children, Wm. A., Charles F., and Ella, two of whom, William and Charles, survive. Mr. DAGGETT was married the following October to Mary E. (sic. maiden name was Lippitt) MENZIE (sic. a widow herself), and came to this city November 2, 1861. Two children were born of this marriage, Frank L. and Jesse H. They have since resided here with the exception of one year which was spent in California and in Ottumwa, Iowa. It was at the latter place that he enlisted in the in the Forty-Seventh Regiment of Iowa Volunteers, Company C, May 20, 1864. He was honorably discharged from service September 28, 1864, holding the rank of corporal. He received a vote of thanks October 1st following, signed by Abraham LINCOLN for honorable service. After his discharge from the army he returned to Fairfield and took up his regular vocation, that of a shoemaker, which he continued until 1886. On account of ill health he was compelled to retire from active business, his army service leaving him a constant sufferer from a complication of diseases. The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. E.L. Schreiner conducting the service. Deceased was sixty-eight years old. The G.A.R. attended in a body. The family feel very thankful for the many kindnesses tendered. All four sons were present at the funeral. A DAGGETT, of Maryville, Missouri, was in the city the first of the week, called here by the death of his father. Item #3 C.L. DAGGETT, of Burlington, was in town the first of the week, called here by the death of his brother William. ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ Fairfield Weekly Journal Thursday June 20, 1895 Pg. 1 Col. 2 "....W.L.DAGGETT, in the north eastern part of our city passed peacefully to his rest Saturday afternoon. He had been ailinmg for some time with lung trouble and his death was hourly expected during the past week. His son came up from Ottumwa the first of the week and was with him when he died. He has a veteran headstone in place for him. His wife, Mary, daughter-in-law Helen (Mrs. Frank DAGGETT) and Helen's son Jesse Hubert DAGGETT are also buried in this plot, but with otherwise unmarked graves.
