William McKinley was one of the best known pioneer residents of the county in the vicinity of the city. He was born in Pennsylvania, April 22, 1826, and came to Iowa and Mahaska county, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William McKinley, in the early day of immigration from the east to the Mississippi Valley country. He was the oldest of a family of eight children, five of whom are now living. John McKinley died but a few weeks ago, and a sister, Mrs. Burns, has also passed over. The living brothers and sisters are Archibald, David, Mrs. Forsythe, Mrs. Chandler and Hannah McKinley, all of whom reside near the city. William was a prosperous farmer and accumulated a competence by thrift and industry. He was a quiet and unassuming worker, but was known in all parts of the county and was respected and honored by all. The deceased leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters, Mrs. Vade Fairchild of Berkley, California, Mrs. Belle Bolan, of Oberlin, Kansas, Wilmer McKinley, Chas., of the Hub, and Ed McKinley, who has been on the farm. The death of the old pioneer, though not unexpected, causes general regret among a host of friends and acquaintances. Oskaloosa; born in Alleghany county, Pa., in 1826; came to this county in 1851, his father having purchased the land on which he now resides; he has held the office of school director; he married Miss Mary Vankirk in 1852; she was born in Pennsylvania; has five children, Ada N., Mary B., Samuel W., William E., and Charles N.
