McKINLEY ; He was born, 1788, in Ireland, died Oct., 9th, at his residence, near Oskaloosa, Iowa. He lived in Pennsylvania for some time; moved with his companion in life to this State in 1851. They were among the oldest settlers in Mahaska county; she was called to her rest just three years before him; here they spent the best part of their lives. Their influence quietly told upon the county and community. No one ever came to their home but what were welcomed to their warm hospitality; early settlers, as well as those of later days can recall the pleasant reception given by these who have been gladly welcomed into the home of the Heavenly Father. Mr. McKinley was a man of strong constitution, good intellect and warm heart. He was not only loving as a father to the last, but was loved by sons and daughters who gladly comforted and cared for him in old age, and tenderly smoothed his pathway through life. Years ago he united with the Presbyterian church; he was ever faithful in waiting upon God in his courts. During the latter part of his life he was denied the public privilege, yet his faith was strong, hope cheering; he seemed like one of the patriarchs. He lived a calm, beautiful, religious life, and patiently waited until God had gathered him full of years, "unto his people." Then quietly he passed from loved ones here to that place where saints "immortal dwell." He left four sons, four daughters, twelve grand children, kind neighbors and hosts of friends to mourn the departure of this "Father of Israel" who died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. From Oskaloosa Weekly Herald, November 14, 1878 issue Tombstone inscription reads: Wm. Mc. Kinley Died Oct 9, 1878 Aged 91 years This would imply the birth date was between 10 October 1786 and 9 October 1787, while the obituary states his birth was 1788. William Jr. was the son of William McKinley, Sr. and Margaret. They came to America in 1807 landing in Maryland. They made their way after a year or two to Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. William Sr. died there in February 1829. William Jr. married Martha Margaret McCullough 10 June 1824 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. William Jr. served as Corporal in Captain James Scott's company of the 1st Rifle Company Militia unit attached to the 125th Regiment in the War of 1812. This militia unit was comprised of men from Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County. He served from 12 September 1812 to November 24, 1812. He had enlisted earlier for a six month term, but the unit was disbanded at the Niagara River when no further service was needed. He received a land warrant for 120 acres for his service which he assigned to his future son-in-law Thompson Forsyth. Thompson Forsyth was son of John Forsyth and Elizabeth McKinley. Elizabeth McKinley Forsyth was daughter of William McKinley, Sr. and sister to this William McKinley, Jr.
