Following an illness extending over a period of five weeks, when two or more operations were resorted to by eminent surgeons. Spinal Meningitis was the beginning of his illness. William Bird, son of the late Francis Mill Bird and Sarah Elizabeth Shaver Bird was born and reared near Mill Gap. His age was 63 years, 4 months and 29 days at the time of his passing. The life of Mr. Bird was a useful and honorable one. He was gifted along the art of woodcraft, was a painstaking farmer and successful stockman. During his prime years he lived in Monterey, taking an interest in High School activity. He was elected County Sheriff an office he filled for four years with honor and integrity, fostering every phase of civic betterment. He was a genial, quiet and unassuming man, a citizen held in high esteem by everyone with whom he was acquainted. Mr. Bird was deeply concerned in religious affairs, was a ruling elder and had frequently represented the Monterey Presbyterian Church at sessions of Presbytery and Synod and had served faithfully this trust. He is survived by his wife Rubenia Ida Gum Bird, (daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Otho Gum); one daughter Constance and a son Frank G. both of whom were with him during his last illness. One sister, Mrs. S.B. Rexrode of Valley Center; two brothers, J.L. Bird of Valley Center and J.Q. Bird of Mill Gap and several nephews, nieces and other relatives survive. Funeral services will be conducted in the home Thursday at 3:00 p. m. by his pastor, Rev. A.E. Johnson assisted by Rev. L.M. Moffett of McDowell and Rev. A.B. Shiflett of Gap Mills, W. Va., and Rev A.W. Wood of Beulah- Stony Run charge. Burial will be made in the family plot In Monterey Cemetery. Son of Francis Mills & Sarah Elizabeth Birds
