Roberts Jr. [edited] William Roberts began practicing law in Lexington, Virginia 30 years ago, after graduation from Washington & Lee University School of Law. During that time, he served 28 years as town and city attorney for Lexington, and nine years as town attorney for Goshen. He was the commissioner in chancery for the Rockbridge County Circuit Court for three decades, and a former substitute and municipal judge of Buena Vista Municipal Court. A native of Champlain, N.Y., Roberts earned B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Springfield College before coming to Lexington. He taught physical education at Virginia Military Institute while he completed his law degree. At W&L, Roberts was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity and the Order of the Coif. After graduation he opened a practice which he maintained until retiring in the early 1990s. As a lawyer, Roberts served as president and vice president of the Rockbridge County-Buena Vista Bar Association, and was a member of the Virginia and American Trial Lawyers Associations. He served three terms on state committees of the Virginia State Bar in the 6th and 7th Districts. Roberts was active in the community as well, serving on the boards of directors of Rockbridge National Bank and Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was a former president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club and the Rockbridge unit of the American Cancer Society. Additionally, he was a past president of the Rockbridge Council of PTAs and a former president of the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce. Before his professional career began, Roberts served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a B-25 pilot in the Asia-Pacific Theater. Roberts retired as a major in 1947.
