HARPER CALLED HERE AT 85 YEARS Funeral Services to be Saturday at Hoskins Funeral Home William Overfield Harper, son of Robert and Deborah Ann Jenks Harper, was born June 17, 1849, in North Manchester, Ind., died at the family home yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, being 85 years, two months, and 13 days old. When he was only a child, he came with his parents to a farm near Wooster, later the family settled on a farm about three miles east of Fairfield; finally, in the winter of 1875 they moved into Fairfield the home in which he died. Never rugged in health he had been an invalid for the last twenty years; his final serious illness dated from last Easter time as he gradually failed day after day, suffering intense pain the greater part of the time. His parents, a sister, Theresa Lenora, and a brother, Franklin Edwin, preceded him in death. He leaves his wife, Ella Sens Harper, to whom hea was married on November 19, 1879, a few relatives and many friends to mourn his loss. For many years Mr. Harper worked in the men's clothing business, having helped to open the first box of goods shipped to the store of James Richardson on October 4, 1875. He remained with that firm until a partnership was formed with Harry Booker (sic. see - Harry F Booker), then continued to work for the firm of Riichardson and Booker; later the business was taken over by Mr. Booker; and finally the store was owned by Lee T. Gobble (sic. see - Lee Taylor Gobble) and Charles H. Heer (sic. see - Charles Henry Heer), known as it is today by the name of Gobble and Heer. Mr. Harper remained as a part of the store force of the various owners until failing health prevented his active service. Often, he jokingly remarked that he had become a part of the fiztures which wnet with the store. As a clerk he was recognized as a genial and untiring worker; he was quick and alert, seeming to sense the needs and tastes of his customers; and always jovial and sincere in his greetings, so much so that old customers would ask, "Where's Harper?" His loyalty to and interest in his employers was unquestioned. He was a well-read man and a great Bible student. For over fifty years he was a member of Knights of Pythias Lodge; and was given a gold medal for fifty years of service and a life membership in the Forest City Lodge Number 37, K. of P. of this city. Funeral services will be held at the Hoskins Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock Sept. 1, in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
