Rocks Badly Cut Flesh Blood Poison Results Later on and Death Came Early Monday Morning in This City William Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Harper of Melville, who was brought to this city last week suffering of injuries received from a runaway horse, passed away Monday morning, the immediate cause of death being blood poisoning. Sunday evening Dr. B. L. Pampel of Livingston was called here for consultation, but little hope was extended to the parents and early the following morning death came. The accident happened a week ago last Sunday when young Harper and Jack Christensen left the Hannon ranch, where Harper had been riding during the summer, for the Ruppert ranch. Tinch Hannon brought the horses in for them, a black and a bay, both of which Harper had ridden and neither of which was very unruly, and asked them to try and get to the Ruppert ranch before dark. They left the Hannon ranch Harper riding the black and Christensen the bay. When they reached Melville they tied the animals to the hook rack and went inside. The bay had a bridle without a throatlatch but a 25-foot rope was tied around his neck, the other end with a loop in it, being thrown on the ground. When the two boys came back the bay had worked the bridle off onto the ground. They decide to exchange horses, young Harper picking up the bridle and starting to put it on the bay. while he held the rope the animal jumped back and started to run, catching his left foot in a coil on the ground. For a half-mile, the young man was dragged in the lane, over rocks and rough ground, but all the time managed to keep his head above ground, not a scratch appearing on it when he was found. Young Christensen immediately jumped on the other horse and started in pursuit, heading the runaway about a half-mile away and cutting the rope around its neck. Young Harper then got up and walked back to Melville, with the assistance of Christensen. The flesh had been torn from his left arm in places, also from the left shoulder and hip, but he did not bear evidence of any internal injury. His condition was not considered serious and Monday he was brought to the hospital in this city, where he apparently did well until blood poisoning set in. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. L. O. Onerheim officiating, interment being in Mountain View. The church was crowded and the floral offerings were magnificent, a huge floral piece from Melville friends covering the casket and extending nearly to the floor on each side. The pallbearers were T. C. Hanon, Grover Bryan, Cleve Dahlmer Standley Hanson, Pearl Maddox, Sandy McMahon. Twenty-seven autos of friends followed the remains to their last resting place attesting the high esteem in which deceased who was 19 years of age, was held by his home people.
