Description	:	William Raines was born at Beverly, Yorkshire, England, March 25, 1857, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Meyer near Nelson, Nebr., November 20, 1928, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 25 days. He emigrated to this country with his parents when nine years of age in the year 1865. The family settled at Cameron, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. Read More	William Raines was born at Beverly, Yorkshire, England, March 25, 1857, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Meyer near Nelson, Nebr., November 20, 1928, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 25 days. He emigrated to this country with his parents when nine years of age in the year 1865. The family settled at Cameron, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. Later the family moved to Kansas and thence to Missouri, and then to Beaver Crossing, Nebr. He was married to Miss Mary Shipps February 6, 1888, and settled on a farm near Beaver Crossing. After ten years residence here they moved to Missouri, and after a short time returned to Beaver Crossing. From here to Creighton, and then to Hardy. In June, 1923, they moved to Crete, where they have lived since. To this union were born four children: two boys and two girls. Bessie died in infancy. The other children are: Mrs. Herman Meyer, Nelson; Mess. Ray and Ralph Raines of Crete; and two grand children. His wife joins the children in mourning his loss. One brother and two sisters also survive him: George Raines, Lewisburg, Kans.; Mrs. Anna Fair, Cushing, Oklahoma; and Mrs. J.C. Morford, Beaver Crossing, Nebraska; and Mrs. J.B. Peters, Mason City, Ills. He was a kind and loving father and husband, and will be sadly missed. Without warning was he taken away from them by the Heavenly Father, but we believe that all things work together for good to those who love God, and so rest in His love. His departure was such as he had desired for the Lord had granted his wishes. He was friendly of disposition, made friends easily and kept them, and he will be missed from the large circle of his friends for they shall see him no more among them. Where ever he had lived he had been honest and upright and a blessing to his neighbors. He seems to have delighted his soul with some of the old fashion songs of the gospel and found them comforting and helpful. We bow before the Lord in the departure of our brother and friend and say with the poet: Let's be brave when the trials come When our hearts are sad and our lips are dumb, Let's strengthen ourselves in the time of test, By whispering softly, "God knoweth best." Let us believe though we can not know, We shall learn some time it is better so. Funeral service was held from the Herman Meyer home southwest of Nelson Friday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. S.H. Jones of the Presbyterian church in Nelson, conducted the service. A quartette of Orin L. Goodrich, Mr. H.A. Brubaker, Mrs. F.A. Scherzinger and F.A. Scherzinger furnished the music. Interment was made in the Hardy cemetery (sic). The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, November 29, 1928; pg. 5 NOTE: Although it says he was buried in Hardy Cemetery, his stone along with his wife's is in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Nebraska.
