William Crabbe Meets Instant Death Beneath Falling Rock. William Crabbe, a well known young man of this city, was instantly killed by a cave-in at the Mammoth Channel mine near Magalia, that struck him as he was rolling a car of ore from the drift, yesterday afternoon shortly before 3 o’clock. Fred Mason, a fellow miner working nearby, when he heard the noise of the falling rock, rushed to the place, but could render no assistance other than to begin to clear the debris from the body of young Crabbe, which was badly mangled. Everything in the mine had been apparently safe, and there had been no thought of danger by Crabbe or his fellow miners. The fall of rock came unexpectedly, and without sufficient warming to allow him a chance to get from beneath. His father, William Crabbe Sr., who is employed at the mine as a tool sharpener, was among the first to view the dead body of his son. Word of the accident was telephoned to Magalia, and Coroner John Wallace was notified. About 4 o’clock he started for the scene in company with deputy-coroner Frank Nau, to hold an inquest and bring the body to this city. William Crabbe had been a resident of Chico for many years, and was esteemed by a large circle of friends for his amiable, cheery disposition. He was married a number of years ago to Miss Annie Bingham, who died nearly two years past. Four small children survive him. They reside at 924 Chestnut street. Besides his parents and children, he leaves two brothers, Ben Crabbe and Hammond Crabbe. ~~~ Chico Record, Sunday Morning, September 17, 1911, pg 4 col 6: William Crabbe Funeral Today. The funeral of William R. Crabbe, the young man of this city who was killed in a cave-in at the Mammoth Channel mine near Magalia, will be held this afternoon from the Bicknell & Moore Undertaking Parlors on Third street. Rev. C.E. Winning will officiate. The Fraternal Order of Eagles, of which young Crabbe was a member, will attend the services in a body. Burial will be in the Chico cemetery. ~~~ 33-year-old William Richard Crabbe was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on September 17, 1911.
