Son of Clark Ellsworth Curtis and Blanche Elexa John OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 15, 1987 CURTIS William Samuel Curtis, second son of Clark Ellsworth and Blanche Elexa (John) Curtis, was born June 13, 1913, on this parents' farm in Ottercreek Township, Lucas County, Iowa. He passed away on October 12, 1987, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 29 days, after living his entire life in Ottercreek Township. Bill received his elementary education at Union School No. 1, only a short distance from his home. He attended Norwood Consolidated High School for 3 years, graduating from Liberty Center High School in Warren County in 1931. He was active in basketball and other sports during his school years. Following graduation, Bill became involved in the Corn-Hog government program, along with his father, while continuing to work on his father's farm. For the next 34 years, Bill served on various government farm programs; as Township Committeeman, member of the County Committee, Grain Bin Supervisor, as well as working for the Soil Conservation Service in various capacities. On July 30, 1940, Bill married Ruth Eleanor Vandell, daughter of Charles. D. and Dora Elizabeth (Casey) Vandell, in Lincoln, Neb. Four children came to bless this home: Joan Marie, James William, Joy Ruth and Julie Renee. Those left to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Ruth, daughter Joan Knutson of Schaumburg, Ill., son James Curtis and wife Peggy of Russell, daughter Joy Curtis of Chicago, Ill., daughter Julie Phelan and husband Dr. Joseph Phelan of Springfield, Ill. and grandchildren Kellee and Kyle Curtis of Russell. Also surviving are sister Angie J. Conrad of Lucas, sister Gladys E. Hedemann and husband Robert of Columbus Junction, Ia., brother Cyril E. Curtis and wife Lois of Chariton, brother Homer D. Curtis and wife Helen of Cochran, Ga., and a host of other relatives and friends. Bill served as Treasurer of Union School District No. 1 for 26 years and also served as Township Clerk of Ottercreek Township. He has been a member of the Paul Revere Lodge No. 638, A.F.&A.M. at Lucas for 40 years. He attended Norwood United Methodist Church at Norwood and accepted Christ as his Savior. He joined the church on November 24, 1957 and was baptized December 8, 1957. In 1941, Bill and Ruth purchased their 80 acre farm where they farmed and raised their family. Bill retired in 1975 from Den-Tal-Ez Chair Mfg. Co. in Des Moines after working there for five years. Bill and Ruth continued to live on their farm until his passing. Bill was a kind and loving husband and father, who took great joy in having his children and grandchildren about him. He was always ready to help those in need. His warm and cheerful spirit will be miss by all who knew and loved him. Masonic services were held by the Paul Revere Lodge No. 638, A.F.&A.M. Wednesday evening, October 14, 1987 at 8 p.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 15, 1987 at 1 p.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Ryon of the First Methodist Church in Chariton officiating. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery. Pallbearers were all nephews of Bill, namely: Danny Crooks, Jerry Fogle, Allen Fogle, Donald Hanlan, Gail Vandell and Tracy Vandell. Honorary pallbearers were Dwight Curtis, Dwaine Curtis, Bernard Curtis, Kenneth McCormick, Lorraine McNeer, William Osenbaugh, Ivan Schrader, Martin Shelton and Robert Willis.
