Mr. Brooks, the son of William H. and Petty Gilmore Brooks, was born July 1st, 1900, at 427 Union St., a home of the Gilmore and Brooks families for more than 70 years. He was the only child born in the house during those 70 years. His father opened the Brooks Grocery Store on Jan. 12th, 1885, on West Fifth Ave. It was moved to its present location in 1890 and Mr. Brooks took his son into the business in 1924. It is the oldest business in Emporia to be operated by one family. Mr. Brooks married Barbara Gansel Aug. 8th, 1928 in Independence. Surviving are his wife of the home; a son William T. Brooks Jr., Wichita; three grandchildren, Barbara Janette Brooks, Wichita, Cynthia and Elizabeth Brooks, Topeka; a brother, E. Hamilton Brooks, Ridgefield, conn.; a sister, Mrs. Earl Keesling, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a nephew, Brooks Becker, who is attending school in France. a sister, Ethel Brooks Becker, preceded him in death. Mr. Brooks was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Emporia Masonic Lodge.
