Description	:	Willie Matt was born on January 17, 1881, to Joseph and Mary (Berns) Matt—the third of eight children. His two older siblings were Anna and Theodore; his younger siblings were Joseph Henry, Henry, Frances, Amanda Helen, and Hugo. Read More	Willie Matt was born on January 17, 1881, to Joseph and Mary (Berns) Matt—the third of eight children. His two older siblings were Anna and Theodore; his younger siblings were Joseph Henry, Henry, Frances, Amanda Helen, and Hugo. Shortly after the birth of his youngest brother, Hugo, on Dec 12, 1891, his mother died. Willie was almost eleven years old at the time. He attended school at National, Iowa. After he was married, both he and his wife, Emilie (née Mueller), were members of the Lutheran church. They lived on a farm one mile north of National, a farm which they had bought from Will's father in March 1909. The Matts milked a few cows, raised hogs and chickens and always farmed with horses. The farm was divided into four fields, one field corn, one oats, one hay, and the other pasture, and these fields were rotated every year. Will would have a young man as hired help during the summer. Will Matt was a director of the school for many years, on the church board, and a member of Farm Bureau. Will and Emilie Matt retired from the farm in 1938 when they moved to Farmersburg, Iowa. Will was the janitor of St. John Lutheran Church for many years. Great but simple plan for crop rotation! As the son of Melvin Matt, grandson of Leo, great grandson of Joseph, and having worked as a child on the Matt home farm, I have a complete appreciation of how these farmers worked the land. Esp. with just horses! Wish I could've met him.515 two 38 2146. Read less
