His success represents the direct result of the application of his own ability and efforts, and he has reason to take pride in being one of the sturdy and valued yeomen of Clayton county. "He was the second in order of birth in a family of eight children, all of whom are living, and first son of Joseph and Anna M[ary] (Berns) Matt, both likewise natives of Clayton county and representatives of sterling pioneer families. Joseph Matt has long been one of the prosperous farmers of this county and commands the high regard of the community in which virtually his entire life thus far has been passed, his devoted wife having been summoned to eternal rest. "Theodore Matt passed the period of his childhood and early youth on the home farm and is indebted to the public schools of his native county for his educational discipline. He remained at the parental home until the time of his marriage, in 1903, when he purchased his present farm, which is one of the finely improved places of Farmersburg township and the operations of which he is carrying forward with consummate discrimination and well directed energy, his wife proving his devoted coadjutor in his progressive activities as one of the substantial agriculturalists of this section of the Hawkeye state. He is a zealous supporter of the cause of the Democratic party, but has not sought public office, though he is serving most effectively as a director of the school district in which he lives. Both he and his wife are communicants of the Lutheran church at McGregor, which village is their post office address. The year 1903 recorded the marriage of Mr. Matt to Miss Etta Gossman, who likewise was born and reared in Clayton county, as were also her parents, who are well known citizens of Clayton township, and of whose six children five are living. Mr. and Mrs. Matt are the parents of three children, whose names and respective dates of birth are here noted: Florence Mary A., February 7, 1905; Jackson M., October 27, 1910; and Lillian Caesara, April 12, 1915." According to his WWI Draft Registration Card (dated 12 Sep 1918), Theodore's date of birth was reported as 20 April 1879, whereas the Social Security Death Index has listed his date of birth as 27 April 1879. Theodore and Etta's only son, Jason, died at age seven on 2 Jul 1917, and tragically, their first daughter, Florence, died in 1920 at age fifteen. In November 1928, however, Etta gave birth to their fourth child, Theodora Jean Matt—Etta was then forty-seven!!
