A Prayer service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Inurnment of her ashes will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Wyona Mavis Zachow was born March 24, 1924 on the family farm in Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Elsie (McClurg) Hartwigsen. She attended country in Carroll County and later high school in Jefferson, Iowa. She graduated from Jefferson High School. She was united in marriage to Edward Zachow on June 17, 1946 in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Richland, South Dakota. Wyona was a homemaker for her family. Edward passed away October 19, 2007. Wyona had many joys in her life, including sewing, crocheting, quilting, and making dolls and stuffed animals. She also enjoyed playing solitaire and doing puzzles. One of her greatest joys through the years was the letter correspondences she had with "pen pals" and family. But most of all, she loved the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her 2 sons: Chris Zachow of Richland, SD, and Gene Zachow (Jeri) of Rock Rapids, IA; 3 grandchildren: Terren Zachow (Amanda) of Hull, IA, Michael Zachow of Hawarden, IA, and Andrew Zachow of Cedar Falls, IA; 4 great grandchildren: Tierra Zachow, Xander Zachow, Xorian Zachow, and Arianna Zachow; one sister: Inez Maile (Raymond) of Vinton, IA; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters: Elda, Vera, Edna, Thelma, and Ruth; and three brothers: Ira, Vern, and Ray.
