Ada was Mary Jane's daughter from a previous relationship, but she was raised in the Lowe home, and Young Oswell is named as her father on her death record. -------------------------------------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," November 9, 1906: OSWELL LOWE PASSES AWAY VICTIM OF MINE EXPLOSION DIES FROM INJURIES AT 5 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING Young Oswell Lowe, 519 South Davis street,, passed away this morning at 5 o'clock at the Ottumwa Hospital, his death resulting from injuries received in the recent mine explosion at the Dempster mine, two miles south of the city. The deceased was 46 years and 25 days of age at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Lowe and seven children to mourn his loss. The children are Lambert, John, Herbert, and Russell Lowe and Mrs. Blanche Mooney and Misses Maude and Bernice Lowe all of this city. When in life, Mr. Lowe was a member of the Local order No. 152 of the U.M.W.A. and Hickory camp No. 31 of the W.O.W. Killed in Explosion. The deceased is the second victim of a disastrous mine explosion which occurred Thursday evening, November 1, at 4 o'clock at the Dempster coal mine two miles south of the city in which Kinsie Huston was instantly killed, and four other miners injured. Lowe was one of the five miners that were being hoisted out of the mine in a cage at the time the explosion occurred. He was hurried to the top the shaft house and lodged in the machinery at the roof. When taken to the Ottumwa hospital it was found that he was seriously injured, having sustained a fractured skull. All that medical aid and skill could do, was done for the unfortunate man but he never rallied. He was unconscious from the time of the accident until his death, with the exception of a short period yesterday. The funeral services over the remains will be held Sunday afternoon from the late residence at 2 o'clock. Rev. C.E. Chambers, pastor of the Davis Street church will have charge of the services. The local lodge No. 152 U.M.W.A. and Hickory camp, W.O.W. will have charge of the funeral. Interment will be made in the Shaul cemetery. "The Lowe Obesequies." C.E. Chambers, pastor of the Davis Street Christian church, conducting the services. The funeral which was one of the largest that has been held in the city for some time, was in charge of Local No. 152, U.M.W.A., and Hickory Camp, W.O.W., which the deceased was a member of. Interment was made in the Shaul cemetery. The pallbearers were three members of the U.M.W. of A and three members from Hickory Camp, W.O.W., and were John Wyatt, Charles Capp, L.J. Ragsdale, Frank Hendricks, J.A. Shipley, and Charles Eakins.
