Bethel deceased were exhumed last summer and in storage at a Indianapolis Airport climate controlled facility until relocation happens. The property Bethel Cemetery sat on was owned by the Airport and surrounded on 3 sides by Fedex. Excavating graves for the new location began on June 17, 2019 and hopefully be be totally completed, including all stones that will also be relocated from the original site, by the proposed cemetery dedication tentatively scheduled for Sept. 28, 2019. Any graves that were unmarked with have new stones added. There is approximately 560 burials involved and to date only about 165 names are known. All graves will be moved in the same layout as the original cemetery. Although the cemetery is adjacent to the Indianapolis International Airport, it is completely fenced-in and is only accessible from South Perimeter Road. It is immediately east of the FedEx Hub, 6648 S. Perimeter Road, Indianapolis. The cemetery is located in Decatur Township (SW quadrant of the SW quadrant of the NE quadrant of Section 26 Township 15 N Range 2E). Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 1, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (02 April 2005), gives the primary cemetery name as Bethel Cemetery with an alternate name of Hoffman Cemetery. The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-49-12 (Bethel Methodist / Hoffman / M. E. Church). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 2096255 (Bethel Methodist Cemetery / Hoffman Cemetery).
