Read More	History: The Columbus Chapel is on the grounds of the Boal Mansion, which is located along business route 322, across from the 28th Division Shrine and Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. In this area, business route 322 is called Boal Avenue, although it is an extension of Atherton Street in State College. There are tombstones and apparent grave sites outside of the chapel crypt, on the side toward the highway. These stones are said to have been moved from Cedar Creek Cemetery (also known as Stanford burial ground) by an employee of Col. Theodore Boal. It is unknown whether the remains were related when the stones were moved. Michael and Susanna Jack (among those moved) were the parents of Nancy, who married George Boal, which may be the reason for relocating these particular stones. Col. Boal's wife had received the Columbus Chapel as an inheritance from the Columbus family in Spain. He felt that it needed a cemetery to make it complete. In the lower level of the Chapel, access from the area where the tombstones are located in the Boal family crypt. There are currently eight members of the family interred there. According to Christopher Lee, director of the Boal Mansion Museum/Columbus Chapel and a Boal descendant, there was talk of moving some family gravesites from the midwest to the crypt. He does not know if this was ever accomplished, but it if was, he feels they are buried beneath the floor of the crypt. The crypt consists of a simple room with a massive u-shaped limestone burial wall. Behind this wall, six family members are buried. The stone wall appears to have all been laid at once, there being no cover plates or closed openings visible. As indicated on the sketch, a seventh burial is within a large vault setting on the floor. The eighth is a small container of ashes on top of the limestone wall. Also on top is a cross and two candleholders. Burials within the limestone wall are two high. The numbering is top to bottom and then left to right, as viewed from the doorway. Information for #8 is provided by Christopher Lee, as there was no plaque for burial. The material in [ ] is provided by Christopher Lee. Boal family papers indicate that the bones of a Native American were discovered near the dooryard of the home during excavation. These bones were apparently interred beneath the floor of the family crypt.
