Easthill Cemetery will now be open for at least another 25 years. Land next to the cemetery, which was used by animals for grazing, has been cleared up by Mendip District Council. Bereavement officer Cheryl Norton said the work meant local families would be able to use the cemetery "for years to come, keeping loved ones close". "We pride ourselves on ensuring cemeteries are kept in good condition, and that they are open around the clock so that families can visit graves whenever they want," she explained. 5 April 2011 ===== Century-old graves to be reused 16 October 07 18:39 GMT Graves more than 100 years old are to be reused to "stop a cemetery crisis" in Somerset. Burial space in one council-run cemetery would only be available for another three years if no action was taken, Mendip District Council said. It manages cemeteries in Street, Shepton Mallet and Frome, where it is planning an extension to create 1,000 more burial plots. It said all available plots would be used before any graves were re-used. Greener graves "Difficulties with burial authorities running out of space across the country have led to proposals favouring the re-use of graves," said Cheryl Norton from the council. "Mendip District Council are approaching crisis point and reviews of procedures and practices had to be undertaken if we were to avoid experiencing the same problems as some other local authorities." The council said if nothing was done, cemetery space in Frome would run out in three years, in Shepton Mallet all graves would be used in ten years and Street's graveyard would be full in 25 years. If families have asked for loved ones' graves not to be reused they would be excluded from the plans, along with graves still being visited, it said. Councillor Alistair Glanvile said he wanted every grave in Mendip's cemeteries to be a cared for. "We recognise that this is an extremely sensitive issue and is not something that we are going to make rash decisions about. "A cemetery has to be local, accessible, safe and sustainable, and it is this last condition that cannot be achieved without the re-use of graves." BBC NEWS 16 October 07
