Description	:	The Church was founded before 1794. The Original Sunday School in Mill Lane, off Stamford Street, is dated 1877. Their first chapel in Ashton was in Harrop’s Yard, the original datestone in the lintel over the door. This stone was moved into the grounds of the chapel on Stamford Street in 1927 and has now been moved again into the porch of Albion United Reformed Church for safekeeping. Read More	The Church was founded before 1794. The Original Sunday School in Mill Lane, off Stamford Street, is dated 1877. Their first chapel in Ashton was in Harrop’s Yard, the original datestone in the lintel over the door. This stone was moved into the grounds of the chapel on Stamford Street in 1927 and has now been moved again into the porch of Albion United Reformed Church for safekeeping. The actual Church Building closed in 2006. The organ pipes went to Altrincham. The Church Building was sold to some developers, who sold in onto other developers, who sold it on ............ regrettably this saga continues into 2019 .................. The Church Building is an abandoned building site and half of the Church Building is in a derelict condition. After 2006 the Congregation began to meet in the extension of the Church - the modern day Sunday School. Due to falling numbers the Congregation folded and met for the last time in September 2018. The Sunday School building has been sold to a separate developer. A fuller history of the Church: From 1797 the leading Methodist group in Ashton was the Methodist New Connexion (MNC) and in 1791 they had acquired this plot in the newly laid out area west of the parish church. In 1799 they built a fairly small chapel at the back of the plot along with a number of cottages. In front of the chapel they created a graveyard from 1803, probably as a useful source of income. As the population of the town increased so the congregation grew and so the chapel had to be enlarged or rebuilt. This took place in 1831 and brought the front of the chapel almost to the Stamford Street frontage. Probably building over the occupied part of the graveyard ---- were remains re-interred ? Burials continued until the 1850s, but there was no prospect of extending the graveyard as land on the east side of the chapel was needed for successive Sunday School buildings. At least one President of the Methodist New Connexion is buried here. The transcriptions of the monumental inscriptions for the remaining 48 headstones in situ are here on Find A Grave. The Methodist New Connexion was formed in 1797 when it seceeded from the Wesleyan Methodists. In 1907 the Methodist New Connexion merged with the United Methodist Free Church and the Bible Christians to form the United Methodist Church. In 1932 the United Methodists joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the Primitive Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
