Description	:	Abner Wickersham was an early settler in what is now Washington township. When Marietta was the county seat, it was his place to trade. He made one visit there with his wife and girls on a road wagon drawn by two span of cows in yolks like oxen. The newspapers there contained a notice of the visit and kind of team, making it out a lucrative affair; and thought the owner must belong to some low-down race. When Marietta was the county seat, it was his place to trade. He made one visit there with his wife and girls on a road wagon drawn by two span of cows in yolks like oxen. The newspapers there contained a notice of the visit and kind of team, making it out a lucrative affair; and thought the owner must belong to some low-down race. This brought from Mr. Wickersham an answer that showed that in cutting criticism he was a full match for the editor. One time a candidate for office called on him at the orchard by the roadside. The candidate introduced himself and named the office for which he was a candidate. Without a word Mr. Wickersham took off the candidate's hat and put it on top of a fence post and, as a phrenologist, proceeded to feel his head. After due deliberation, he said: "I think the man owning this head is a man competent to fill the office, and I don't know anything in the way of my giving thee my support." Battin and Moscripp, Past and Present of Marshall County, Iowa, p. 75 Abner and family arrived in Marshall Co., IA, 30 Nov 1856 with cattle pulling their covered wagon and settled 12 miles southwest of Marshalltown. The first winter was spent in a one or two-room log cabin, without a door as they were unable to find a tree large enough to hew a door out of. My great-grandfather, Samuel, used to tell me (as a 6 or 8 year old) how the wind took the heat up the fireplace chimney with only blankets over the door opening. They were offered a good price for their horses while in Indiana, so sold them and drove the cattle as power the rest of the way. Dorothy Wickersham Rider, Descendant of Abner Wickersham, Letter, 1986 The parents of our subject were connected with the Society of Friends, and the father, Abner, was born in Clinton County, Ohio, and the mother, Leah, near Lynchburg, Va. The father lived on his farm in Grant county Ind. for fifteen years, and in 1855 he moved to Marshall County, Iowa, where he became very well situated, and was the owner of 800 acres of land in that county, besides $15,000 in personal property. In the winter of 1887-88 he made a visit to Florida, and was taken violently ill, and died very suddenly on the 8th of March, 1888, in his seventieth year. The mother resides in Marshall County and is seventy-one years old, having lived to see her five children grown to manhood and well established. They are: Samuel, Thomas, Asaph H., Enoch H. and Benjamin Franklin. Both he and Lelia are buried in Maple Grove. It is possible that Abner's older brother, John, brought news that Abner and Lelia's marriage was accomplished contrary to discipline at Centre MM, New Hope, Ohio. They were disowned by the Society of Friends at Marion MM, Indiana, 18 Oct. 1840, two days after John was received there from Centre MM.
