Hardester, one of the best known and most highly regarded citizens of this community, died in the McCready Hospital here early Sunday morning, at the age of 81. He had been ill for about two weeks and entered the hospital for treatment the previous Friday. Born on Smiths Island in 1870 he was the son of the late Henry S. and Alice M. Hardester. His family moved to Crisfield when he was a youth, and shortly after he engaged in the mercantile business, and with the exception of a few years, had spent his entire life in the retail merchandising field, and for a number of years has owned and operated a paint and wall paper establishment on central Main street. Mr. Hardester was a man of exceptional talent in many ways. He was an artist of real ability and a number of his paintings are highly prized in his home and elsewhere. He was a most loyal friend, and would do anything in his power to help others. A man of determination and persistence, he accomplanied much for the public good, and was always interested and active in promoting those things which promised to better conditions in the community, State and Nation. It was fitting that at the funeral services his casket stood within a few feet of the seat he had occupied Sunday after Sunday in Immanuel Methodist Church, in which his interest always was high and where his attendance and generosity set a worthy example. One of the oldest members of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147, A. F. & A. M., he was also a Past Patron of Chesapeake No. 27, Order of the Eastern Star, as well as holding a life membership in Crisfield Lodge No. 1044, B.P.O. Elks, of which he was a Past Exalted Ruler and for years Chaplain. The community lost a fine and representative citizen when Mr. Hardester passed away. He reposed at the Covington Funeral Home until noon on Thursday, when he was taken to Immanuel Church to lie in state until funeral services were held at 2.30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. Otis P. Jefferson, whose theme was "Let not your heart be troubled; if ye believe in God, believe ye also in Me." Interment was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Bearers were members of the Masonic Order, who attended the services in a body and held Masonic services at the grave. Members of the Eastern Star and of the Lodge of Elks also attended the services in a body, and there were many lovely flowers as a background as the casket lay in the forefront of the church, attesting to the affection and esteem that many hearts held for him. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eva A. Hardester, two sons, William D. Hardester of Pocomoke City and Allen L. Hardester of Crisfield, one sister, Mrs. Sue D.
