Agnes Self ... ." ----- The Chehalis Bee-Nugget (WA) Friday, May 20, 1932 "ANNUAL SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES FOR SENIOR CLASS OF NINETY-FOUR WILL BE HELD THURSDAY EVENING, MAY 26 Baccalaureate Services Sunday Evening in the Junior High School Auditorium; Sermon by Rev. William McGahagin - Graduating Exercises Program Includes Three Addresses by Graduates - Musical Program and Presentation of Awards. There will be ninety-four graduates in the 1932 senior class of Chehalis high school. ... The list of graduates follows: ... Agnes C. Self. ... ." ----- Agnes met Loren Wayne Brown, the son of George William & Edna Lee (Smith) Brown. According to Agnes, she and Loren dated for 3 months and 10 days before they were married in Yelm, Thurston Co, WA, on February 8, 1936. She & Loren had two children, Dennis Wayne (my husband) & Ronald Gene. They lived in Centralia for a number of years before moving to Tacoma. Loren worked for Mt. Rainier Ordinance Depot as a mechanic/mechanist. They later bought a home with 5 plus acres in Puyallup. Loren died on Mother's Day, May 8, 1960. At this time Dennis was in training as a pilot in the Air Force. After the shock of losing Loren, Agnes soon learned to be self-sufficient and support herself. Dennis was stationed at Columbus AFB where he was a B-52 pilot. I met her for the first time when my husband (Dennis) and I stopped to see her while on our honeymoon in 1963. I was impressed by this friendly pretty petite woman who welcomed me to the family. Over the years we became great friends, and I always enjoyed her visits. The first trip to see us was when we lived in Columbus, MS. In 1965, my husband resigned from the Air Force & went to work as a pilot for a commercial airline. Over the years (while living in the suburbs of Chicago and Denver and later after my husband retired, in the backwoods of the MO Ozarks) I enjoyed her visits, which were filled with fun and laughter. Many humorous incidents come to mind as I'm writing this. We got to know each other very well when my husband was away from home, and I felt like she was my second mom. She was devoted to our children, Steve and Kathy, and they loved her too. The love of her husband, Loren, was always with her, and her eyes would sometimes mist up while recalling special times in their lives. She was tender-hearted, caring, thoughtful, and always considerate of family and friends. She lived a long life, reaching 90, before she died on July 3, 2002. I really miss her and don't think there could ever be a better mother-in-law. Her obituary follows: The Chronicle Centralia/Chehalis WA. July 5, 2002 "Agnes Charlotte Brown, a Lewis County native, died Wednesday, July 3, in Bremerton. She was 90. Brown was born June 3, 1912, in Centralia to David and Amanda (Sizemore) Self. She was the third of their seven (five) daughters. Brown became a born-again Christian at the age of 16. In 1932, she graduated from Chehalis High School. On Feb. 8, 1936, she married Loren Brown. In 1942, they moved to Tacoma, where Brown was employed at the Boeing Co. during World War II. She then worked for Nalley's Foods. Brown was also employed in canneries, in the catering field and at the Western Washington Fair, Puyallup, before retiring in 1994. In 1951, the Browns moved to Puyallup and purchased a 5 1/2 acre farm. In 1998, she moved to Bremerton to be near family members. Brown had been very fond of working around the farm and of gardening. She traveled extensively, visiting England, Scotland, Ireland, Jerusalem and many other places, including Hawaii, which she visited numerous times. Her favorite destinations, however, were Las Vegas and Reno, Nev. Brown's survivors said she loved life and her family, most especially her grandchildren. Brown's husband, Loren, died May 8, 1960. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Brown, Patterson, Mo., and Ronald Brown, Bremerton; two sisters, Vivian Heryford, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Bertha Towner, Centralia; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Remembrances may be donations to a church of the donor's choice. Interment will take place in Greenwood Memorial Park, Centralia. No service has been announced. Arrangements are under the direction of Sticklin Funeral Chapel, Centralia."
