Anderson of the Federated Church of Creighton officiated. Burial was in Creighton. Mr. Crandall, who was 89 years of age, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Winnetoon, following a weeks's illness. Barr, Portland, Ore. ...The Verdigre Eagle 12 Oct 1939 Albert Crandall was the son of Mark and Elizabeth Schelenger Crandall. He was born in a log cabin about 23 miles southwest of Chicago, IL. At that time the town was called New Breman, it is now Tinley Park. Albert was the third child of ten. On Dec. 23, 1873, he married Mary Ann Stokes. Their first four children were born in IL. In the spring of 1884, Albert and a carpenter traveled from IL to Knox County, NE to a parcel of land that Albert's father had purchased the previous year. Here they built a five room farmhouse and a barn. During the next 12 years their other five children were born in the farmhouse near Winnetoon. Two of the children died, Clark W. at age 11 and Harvey B. at age 2. The children who grew to adulthood were Howard W, Cora L, Owen Willis, Alma E, Maud A, Harry and Mark Leonard. From 1898 to 1902, when Albert was sheriff of Knox County, the family lived at Niobrara. Their eldest son, Howard and his bride, Clara Bonge stayed on the farm, until Albert and Mary Ann returned. In 1914, they moved into the new town of Winnetoon, about four miles northeast of their farm. Here Albert raised Spotted Poland China hogs as breeding stock and had a wood working shop. From 1914 until his death, A.W. kept a daily diary of the local people and events of the day. He gave quite a historical insight to life in a small Midwest town. These diaries were misplaced until May 1994 when they were discovered in the Winnetoon schoolhouse which had been closed since 1967. In September 1994 Winnetoon residents hosted an A.W. Crandall Day to return his diaries to the family. The diaries have since been microfilmed and are available at the Nebraska State Historical Society.
